MAINTENANCE WORKER 1
Job description:
Description of Work:
Under supervision, performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor in the construction and maintenance of streets, sewers, water lines, parks, buildings, airport, and other municipal facilities; drives trucks and operates equipment incidental to work; services and fuels equipment.
Duties:
Participates in the construction and maintenance work such as forming, paving, and finishing concrete; cuts and breaks up concrete and asphalt pavement; uses hand tools, shovels, jackhammer, and tamper; patches streets; may construct or repair sidewalks, curbs, and gutters; cleans and rebuilds catch basins; installs and repairs street signs; paints streets; operates trucks and light motorized equipment; may perform a variety of work in construction and maintenance of water and sewer system facilities; may help set water meters; perform pipe laying, cutting, and other tasks connected with water and sewer facilities. Other duties include occasionally operates heavier types of motorized equipment such as motor grader or loader on a training basis; may load refuse, perform minor carpentry and other work as assigned.
Qualifications:
Ability to understand and follow written and oral directions and safety practices; ability to operate a variety of construction and maintenance equipment; ability to operate hand power equipment; good physical condition for outdoor work and ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift over 100 pounds; dexterity and ability to stand, walk, run, climb, crawl, pull, and to perform other body movements; hand/eye/foot coordination adequate to handle tools and operate equipment; ability to hear in person and by radio and to note traffic and other hazards; ability to see work and immediate surroundings and to complete simple reports; ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other employees and the supervisor.
Experience:
Graduation from high school or GED is desirable.
Special Requirements:
Possession of valid Kansas Class B commercial driver's license.
MAINTENANCE WORKER 2
Description of Work:
Under supervision, performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled labor in the construction and maintenance of streets, sewers, water lines, parks, buildings, airport, and other municipal facilities; drives trucks and operates street sweeper and equipment incidental to work; may serve as seasonal leadworker over laborers.
Duties:
Assists higher level workers in various maintenance, repair, and construction work; may work alone; makes and installs signs; saws concrete; assists in servicing wells and pumps; clears and cleans sewers by flushing or rodding; assists in repair of piping and engines; paints; performs building maintenance; does planting, setting, pruning, and caring for trees, shrubs and mowers; mows grass; assists with placing and finished concrete; repairs, patches, seals, and gravels streets; observes streets, sidewalk gutters, bridges, and related structures for maintenance needs; salts and sands streets; operates sprinkler systems and waters; changes light bulbs; cleans parks and other areas; applies herbicides and pesticides; checks oil, fuel, and water in vehicles and equipment; maintains recreation and parking facilities. Other duties include operating a welder and a cutting torch incidental to work; performs carpentry work in the repair and maintenance of public facilities; loads and hauls refuse when needed; reads meters; may serve as a leadworker; performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Some knowledge of maintenance of public ground and facilities; physical strength and ability to perform heavy physical work including ability to lift and carry objects of 50 pounds and to occasionally lift over 100 pounds; ability to walk, climb, bend, crawl, push, pull, and to perform other similar body movements; hand/eye/foot coordination adequate for handling tools and operating and driving equipment; ability to hear others in person and by radio, and to note traffic and other hazards; ability to see adequately for performance of work, operation of equipment, and completing simple reports; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to operate trucks and equipment; knowledge of operation and maintenance of trucks, equipment and hand tools.
Experience and Training:
Any combination of experience and training equivalent to completion of high school or GED and two years of experience as Laborer or Maintenance Worker 1 in maintenance of grounds, streets, buildings, facilities, or utilities.
Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid Kansas Class B commercial driver's license; pesticide applicator's certification may be required for some positions.
Pay:
$22.00 - $29.00 per hour
