Job Description

HI USA has a long history of operating seasonal hostels on Martha s Vineyard, and we re currently seeking dedicated Seasonal Hostel Assistants for our Martha s Vineyard location. If you're looking for a fulfilling seasonal opportunity in a scenic island community, we'd love to hear from you! We are looking to hire and have candidates start as soon as possible, ideally by May 18. As a Hostel Assistant, you ll provide general support by managing the front desk, handling housekeeping tasks, and assisting with facility and grounds maintenance. Accommodation is provided and includes a private room with shared facilities including bathroom, shower, kitchen, and common living areas. While training will be provided, we re looking for applicants who bring a passion for customer service, a love of travel, and an appreciation for HI USA s mission. Knowledge of Martha s Vineyard and surrounding areas is a plus. Unlike some of our more rural hostel locations, a vehicle is not necessary on Martha s Vineyard, and many staff choose to get around by bike or public transportation. Hourly pay range:
$15 - $16/hour, including on-site housing. Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays. Applicants must be available to commit through the end of the season in September to be considered.
Responsibilities:
Welcome, register, and orient guests with cultural sensitivity Handle individual and group reservations promptly and accurately Resolve guest inquiries, issues, and feedback professionally Ensure hostel security and safety protocols are followed Promote the mission of HI USA and represent the organization positively Provide information on HI memberships, the hostel, and local attractions Assist in planning and executing special events Perform housekeeping, laundry, maintenance, and groundskeeping tasks as needed Complete other duties as assigned by the
Hostel Manager Skills/Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED. Customer service experience. Experience handling cash and recording sales transactions preferred. Lifting and stretching required for bed making, furniture movement, storage of deliveries, yard work, and basic maintenance. Must enjoy working with the public and have the ability to calmly and professionally handle conflict, guest issues, or emergencies. Excellent oral communication and organizational skills. Computer literacy and familiarity with Microsoft Office preferred. Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team. Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment. Must be willing to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as schedule requires. First Aid and CPR certification preferred; training and certification may be provided Hostelling experience a plus. Ability to speak a second language a plus.
