Position Overview:
Provides as needed assistance to street department to construct, maintain, repair, and treat city road and stormwater infrastructure while coaching subordinates and communicated well with all.
Essential Functions:
Assists with culvert repairs, keeps ditches clean and free of obstacles, and performs snow removal and salt and sand distribution, assuring for safety, thoroughness and professionalism. Maintains an awareness of the operation of a variety of tools and equipment. Operates the variety of tools and equipment, assuring for compliance with safety procedures. Maintains "on call" status on assigned schedule; complies with the schedule, assuring for professionalism. Maintains an awareness regarding the use of various equipment, assuring for thoroughness. Assists in the operation of various equipment, assuring for compliance with safety and other procedures. Assists on preventative and corrective maintenance program and schedule of equipment. Rakes, rolls and smooths asphalt assuring for following all safety procedures and using all safety equipment and assuring for appropriate amount of asphalt for the repair. Assists with concrete repair projects, including installing forms, laying bedrock, using the "wacker", smooths and sweeps and saws grooves, assuring for following all safety procedures and using all safety equipment. Conducts and completes any required cleanup and project shut-down activities, assuring for thoroughness. Assists with other street repair activities as requested, assuring for safety, following appropriate procedures. Completes adequate "put away" of all equipment, supplies and tools. Deals with the public in a professional and courteous manner. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
At least 18 years of age. Must pass pre-employment drug testing and submit to periodic drug testing as required by applicable laws. May be required to work weekends or a variety of shifts. Subject to emergency call-in. Ability to operate a dump truck, tractor, and mower. Follow oral and written instructions; Operate equipment such as riding and farm tractors with PTO implements, rubber tire loaders, dump and flat-bed trucks, snow plows, salt spreader, mowers, hand and power tools, and vehicles in a manner consistent with safety principles; Operate vehicles and equipment with both standard and automatic transmissions; Accurately document and maintain simple records and logs as well as brief reports; Read and apply instructions; Communicate effectively verbally; Effectively welcome and embrace differences among employees and citizens; Perform effectively as a member of a team in carrying out the City's stated mission and philosophy; Present an overall professional image; Deal effectively and courteously with associates and the general public; Perform the essential functions of the job without posing a direct threat to the health and safety of self or others. Must have a valid Drivers' License or must take and pass, at minimum, the written portion of the Commercial Driver's License (CDL) exam (permit) within 90 days of hire. Must obtain a class "B" CDL within the 6-month probationary period.
