Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
The Town of La Grange is accepting applications for a Public Works Worker / Facilities Maintenance Technician. This is a skilled technical and manual labor position responsible for performing a broad range of public works and facilities maintenance duties in support of the Town's infrastructure, public spaces, and municipal buildings. The position requires versatility across multiple service areas including streets, utilities, refuse collection, parks, and the maintenance, repair, and upkeep of Town-owned buildings and grounds. This position operates under the general supervision of the Public Works Superintendent and may work independently or as part of a crew. The employee is expected to exercise sound judgment, follow established safety practices, and maintain professional working relationships with supervisors, colleagues, and the general public. Starting salary is a minimum of $37,440 annually ($18.00/hour) and is negotiable depending upon qualifications, experience, and relevant certifications held at time of hire.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES
The following duties represent the primary functions of this position. This list is not exhaustive, and the employee may be required to perform other related duties as assigned. Public Works Operations Operates Town-owned vehicles and equipment including pick-up trucks, dump trucks, backhoes, street sweepers, tractors, bush hogs, and riding/walk-behind lawnmowers Performs refuse collection duties, including the operation of refuse collection vehicles Maintains and performs repairs to water distribution and wastewater collection systems, including line maintenance, inspections, and minor repairs Performs street maintenance activities including patching, crack sealing, mowing rights-of-way, and clearing drainage structures Maintains parks and public greenspaces through mowing, trimming, litter removal, and general upkeep Operates power tools and equipment including mowers, string trimmers, chainsaws, and pressure washers Assists sign crews with installation, repair, and replacement of traffic and regulatory signage Performs snow and ice removal operations as needed Buildings & Grounds Maintenance Performs routine and preventive maintenance on Town-owned buildings and facilities, including minor plumbing repairs, carpentry, painting, masonry, and general building repairs Maintains HVAC filters, lighting systems, and other building systems as part of routine maintenance schedules Conducts grounds maintenance for Town facilities, including landscaping, irrigation, mowing, and seasonal plantings Responds to facility maintenance requests and work orders in a timely and professional manner Assists with the setup, breakdown, and maintenance of equipment and facilities used for Town events and operations Identifies and reports structural, mechanical, or safety deficiencies in Town buildings and grounds to the supervisor Coordinates with contractors and vendors on repair projects as directed by the supervisor Maintains accurate records of maintenance activities, materials used, and work completed General Duties Responds to emergency call-outs as required, including after-hours and weekend emergencies Follows all applicable safety regulations, OSHA standards, and Town safety policies Maintains assigned tools, equipment, and vehicles in clean, safe, and operable condition Communicates effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and the public in a courteous and professional manner Performs other duties as assigned by the Public Works Superintendent or designee
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Licensure High School Diploma or GED equivalent required Valid North Carolina State Driver's License with an acceptable driving record required at time of hire Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days of employment, a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Permit Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Ability to safely operate a variety of municipal vehicles, heavy equipment, and power tools Knowledge of, or ability to learn, standard practices in public works maintenance, construction, and utility operations Knowledge of, or ability to learn, standard practices in building maintenance, repair, and facilities management Ability to read and interpret work orders, equipment manuals, blueprints, and safety data sheets Ability to understand and follow both written and verbal instructions Ability to work independently with minimal supervision when required Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the public Ability to respond to emergency situations and work outside of normal hours when required
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position involves heavy physical labor in both outdoor and indoor environments. The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodation may be made for individuals with disabilities consistent with the ADA and applicable state law. Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including regularly lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and occasionally more with assistance Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb for extended periods Ability to work in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and humidity Ability to work in confined spaces and at elevated heights as required by the position Exposure to noise, dust, fumes, chemicals, and other conditions typical of public works and maintenance environments Ability to operate heavy machinery and power tools requiring manual dexterity and physical coordination
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The following qualifications are preferred but not required. Candidates who possess any of the following may be given additional consideration, and these qualifications may affect the offered salary within the established range: Prior experience in municipal or government public works operations Prior experience in building maintenance, facilities management, or a related skilled trade (e.g., plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry) Current possession of a Class A CDL Current possession of NC Water Distribution or Wastewater Collections certification OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
The Town of La Grange offers a competitive compensation and benefits package for full-time employees: Starting salary of $37,440 annually ($18.00/hour minimum); actual starting rate negotiable based on qualifications, experience, and certifications Salary increases available upon satisfactory completion of probationary period.
