A Maintenance Helper or Assistant assists maintenance mechanics. Repairs and maintains equipment and machines, such as cars or heating systems. May assemble or adjust machines as directed by a head mechanic.
Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled manual labor in the construction and maintenance of roadways, water and sewer systems, drainage facilities, fences, buildings, parks, cemeteries, golf courses and other public facilities and in weed and insect control; drives truck and operates light equipment incidental to the work.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
Assists Maintenance Workers II, III and IV in various maintenance, repair and construction work, but may work alone. Assists in routine repair and maintenance of equipment and engines including: checks oil, fuel and coolant in vehicles and equipment. Performs building and facilities maintenance to include: painting; and placing and finishing concrete; and makes, installs various signs, barricades and other traffic control devices; use all types of hand and power tools. Operates vehicles and trucks, light tractors, loaders, lawn and street equipment, aerators and gang mowers relevant to the work; operates ice and snow equipment. Mixes and applies pesticides; prunes trees and shrubs; maintains park, cemetery and golf course plantings and turf; cleans ditches and other areas; occasionally leads other full time and temporary employees. Assists in construction and maintenance of water, sewer and drainage facilities and structures and fences. May train on heavy and light equipment under direction/supervision of higher-level employees. Feeds and cares for animals in zoo and parks. May locate burial plots, bury or disinter remains. Provide assistance to plumbers, electricians or electronic technicians; may operate sweepers, dozers and other heavy equipment. Performs other work which is consistent with the essential elements of the job.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Some knowledge of the maintenance of public roads and facilities. Ability to learn operation and maintenance of trucks and light equipment and hand tools. Ability to establish working relationships with employees, supervisors, officials, and the public. Ability to communicate in person, by telephone and/or two-way radio; ability to comprehend instructions, manuals and blueprints.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Any combination of formal training and work experience equivalent to completion of high school, resulting in the ability to comprehend and follow written and oral directions and to perform basic arithmetic and some experience as an agriculture worker, construction laborer or maintenance worker in maintenance of grounds, utilities, buildings, roads or similar facilities.
