Job Description

Posting Details District Five is one of six districts of the New Mexico Department of Transportation. The boundaries of District Five include the following counties: Torrance, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Taos, and San Juan. Employees in the District are responsible for providing the Maintenance, Construction, Engineering Support, and Business support measures of the Department to ensure the safety of the public as well as efficient highways. This position is in Santa Fe and will be within the District Five Complex /Mainteance Section. As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.

Why does the job exist? Position manages the New Mexico Department of Transportation's District 5 Maintenance Program to assure timely delivery of various maintenance projects within the district; coordinate and manage the administration and oversight of the district's Maintenance Management; and will serve as assistant to the District Engineer. How does it get done? Incumbent will supervise District Maintenance Staff for all maintenance functions, including rest areas. Manage the office, budgets, staff and available resources in order to assure professional work ethic and prudent use and expenditure of state resources. Approval of payment to contractors. Manage allocated budget for internal maintenance projects as well as contracted projects. Attend plan review meetings and provide input regarding impacts to the maintenance function. Responsible for contract negotiations and executing contracts. Manage multiple managers/supervisors requests for hire and other HR transactions Maintaining sufficient staffing levels in the district. Who are the customers? New Mexico Department of Transportation employee's, contractor's, and other entities of the department. Ideal Candidate New Mexico Department of Transportation employee's, contractor's, and other entities of the department. Minimum Qualification Bachelor of Science Degree in a relevant Engineering discipline, licensure in accordance with the Engineering and Surveying Practice Act and twelve (12) years as an Engineer with experience in a management function. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field above licensure requirements and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling sixteen (16) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Office of the State Engineer only: Bachelor of Science Degree in a relevant Engineering discipline, licensure in accordance with the Engineering and Surveying Practice Act and twelve (12) years as an Engineer with experience in a management function. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field above licensure requirements and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling sixteen (16) years may substitute for the required education and experience only. A Master of Science Degree in a relevant Engineering discipline may substitute for the Professional Engineer licensure. Employment Requirements Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Business reference check and Driver's License verification are required and employment is conditional pending results. Registration as a Professional Engineer by the New Mexico State Board of Registration for Professional Engineer and Land Surveyors by date of hire. Working Conditions Work is performed in office/field in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow.
May include exposure to:
sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and/or asphalt and petroleum products; highway speed/high volume traffic and loud noises; falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; heavy lifting; sitting/standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling for extended periods of time may be required. Must have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also include being performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers. May be required to work irregular hours or emergencies on short notice; willingness to accept change or geographical assignments; interaction with the public, local, county schools and city officials by phone and in person.
