Accepting Online Applications Only Information on How to Apply The Public Works Maintenance Division is seeking to fill an entry-level maintenance worker position on the Surface Stormwater Street Sweeper Team. Folks who are interested in an exciting public service career helping fulfill organizational goals by maintaining clean stormwater sweeping Eugene's streets keeping them safe, clean, and clear of hazards in the right of way. We are seeking a nightshift street sweeper operator, someone that enjoys working a nightshift, being a part of a team, yet works independently and is a self-motivated, positive, and has a passion for keeping our streets and waterways clean. During winter months, responding to freezing events, operating de-icing vehicles, which includes snow/ice events operating plows and may work extended hours depending on storm response need. Other emergency events may include working with first responders to clean up a vehicle crash and responding to hazards in the right-of way, such as dead animals, downed trees, or anything impeding traffic. The employee will work both independently and, in a team, setting performing, organizing, and documenting routine maintenance tasks using mobile technology. Performs all the required job duties of the Maintenance Worker 1/2 classification. CDL carriers encouraged to apply.

Shift hours are currently Monday night

• Thursday night 8:30 pm
• 7:00 am. Positions assigned to Swing or Graveyard shifts receive an additional $0.80 per hour. This position may be required to shift work schedule, including hours and days, throughout the course of the year. Required to work weekends.

NOTE:

Employees hired into the entry level Maintenance Worker 1 position are assigned to a specific Public Works Maintenance crew and are required to participate in a competency training program that is designed to take 18-24 months to complete. After 18 months in the assignment, an employee's position is eligible to flex to the semi-skilled Maintenance Worker 2 level when they have completed and shown basic proficiency in each skill area in addition to having the classification requirement minimum of three years public works maintenance, construction or repair experience. For those hired without a Commercial Driver's License, priority may be placed on that probationary requirement before beginning the proficiency training program.

• Examples of Duties Performed
• Duties may include but are not limited to the following
• The primary duty for this position will be operating a street sweeper and maintaining sweeper routes according to permits, Working a ten-hour night shift on a small team primarily independently with direction from a Lead Worker. Other tasks may include manual labor of cleaning pedestrian crossings, storm drains, leaf collection, operating a deicing vehicle/plow during inclement weather events.
• Performs manual maintenance activities such as hauling and spreading gravel to a uniform depth, shoveling and raking asphalt and concrete, clearing catch basins and ditches, cleaning wastewater lines, repetitive lifting, digging holes, picking up dead animals, and assists with installation and repair of sewer pipe.

Clearing hazards from the right of way. Performs general maintenance of construction equipment, hand and power tools; identifies needed repairs and preventive maintenance of vehicles and large equipment. May enter manholes or other confined spaces. May work in and around raw sewage. Maintains daily work records as required. Performs minor carpentry, painting, concrete work, or other related tasks. May train coworkers and seasonal employees in equipment use, care, and safety procedures. Performs work outside in varying and extreme weather conditions while exposed to a variety of hazards; regularly lifts objects and equipment. Actively supports and respects diversity in the workplace. May require shift work and weekend work. Performs other related work as assigned. Experience :

One year of experience in public works maintenance, construction, sweeper operation, or repair work.

License or Certificate :

Valid Oregon driver's license, or ability to obtain by date of hire; must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City's standard. Oregon law requires that an out-of-state license holder must obtain a valid Oregon license (with appropriate endorsements) within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state (ORS 803.355). Possession of, or ability to obtain, an Oregon State Class A Commercial Driver's License within one year of hire date. Knowledge of:

Types and uses of tools and equipment used in maintenance, repair, and/or construction work. Safety precautions and the ability to identify hazards. Standard safety precautions, safety hazards, and safe working procedures in areas assigned in the Right of Way. Maintenance, repair, and construction work in the area of assignment. Preventive maintenance practices. Computer and applicable computer programs.

Ability to:

Provide and wear personal protective equipment as required, including footwear meeting OSHA and City requirements. Follow verbal and written instructions and keep accurate work records. Operate assigned equipment and specialized hand and power tools. Perform strenuous physical work outdoors in varying weather conditions, which may include heavy lifting and direct contact with raw sewage. Perform manual construction and maintenance duties requiring specific skills in assigned area. Be available for shift work and after-hours callbacks. Maintain an active cell phone number to be available to respond for emergency callback as necessary. Learn new tasks and equipment operations as required. Work independently and as part of a crew. Identify safety hazards. Assign, lead, train, and review the work of seasonal employees. Communicate effectively and courteously with City employees and the public and establish effective working relationships. Supplemental Information Physical Requirements/Working Conditions Mostly outdoors in field environment with exposure to all typical weather conditions, including travel from site to site. Exposure to sharp objects, burns from hot materials, pinch points, moving objects/vehicles in right of way, dust/noise/vibration, working at heights, biological hazards from sewers, grease/smoke/ material fumes/gasses, cramped quarters, inclement weather conditions, slippery surfaces, electrical shock, toxic/caustic chemicals, and animal/insect bites. Operates City vehicles, forklift, hoist/aerial lifts, ladders, variety of hand/power tools, jackhammer, measuring and testing equipment, variety of specialized trucks/equipment associated with the construction and maintenance trades. Uses safety equipment including hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, steel-toed safety shoes, hearing protection, gloves, dust mask, respirator, SCBA as required, rubber boots, seat belts and other PPE as required.
