Job Description

Purpose Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the street maintenance department with the City. This position is temporary. If selected for the position in Street Maintenance, employment will be set up with a temporary staffing agency the City is contracted with for 2026/2027. This position is a pipeline to full-time employment with the City of Kingsport if full-time positions become available. Essential Functions Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks using appropriate hand and power tools (shovels, rakes, drills, blowers, etc.); Maintains City areas (this could include walkways, streets, potholes, snow and ice removal, litter pick-up, etc.); Operates non-CDL City-owned vehicles and equipment and responsibly comply with all traffic laws, safety regulations, and city policies; Operates small equipment such as an asphalt roller; Ensures all tasks are completed in a safe and efficient manner; Performs minor maintenance/repairs to equipment and vehicles used; Keeps appropriate records of the tasks performed; Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Ability to work independently:
Knowledge of the appropriate skilled trades associated with the assigned department; Knowledge in using hand and power tools in construction and maintenance work; Knowledge of methods and practices used in performing skilled building maintenance; Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of relevant equipment; Knowledge of the elements of construction technology as they relate to the assigned construction, maintenance, and repair activities; Skill in performing manual work requiring periods of extensive physical exertion and potential exposure to adverse weather conditions; Skill in reading schematics and following written instructions; Skill in communicating effectively orally and in writing, including tactful and courteous communications with the public; Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, other city personnel, and the public. Education and Experience High School graduate or GED equivalent preferred; Valid driver's license; The City of Kingsport does not currently offer any benefits for Part-Time, Seasonal, or Temporary Employess.
