Job Description

This is accomplished by preparing sites for work; maintaining and repairing water and sewer lines and mains; completing work orders; repairing lines and equipment; answering questions from customers; and informing the public regarding closures. Other duties include maintaining vehicles and tools; inspecting sites; and assisting with water cutoffs and reconnects. Prepares sites for work by placing hydraulic shoring jacks at excavation sites; excavating and backfilling areas; and digging holes to expose water and sewer lines for repairs; Removes and restores residential landscaping and areas within the city right-of-way during the process of making water/wastewater repairs; restores appearance of construction or excavation sites by removing excess dirt from site; replacing grass, sod, trees, or shrubs; Makes repairs to the water/wastewater systems by reviewing the work site; determining necessary materials, resources, and supplies to make the repairs. Ensures site and traffic safety in the roadways by placing and removing traffic cones; placing and removing barricades and advanced warning signs; and routing traffic as appropriate. Maintains vehicles by checking fluids; stocking vehicles with equipment, materials, and supplies; and reports needed maintenance and repairs; Locates Water and Sewer mains and valves for contractors and to complete day to day work; Work "on-call" to complete above duties if they are to arise; Ensures continuous operation of water and sewer pipes by fitting pipe; repairing sewer laterals and mains; repairing manhole covers; connecting water and sewer lines to citizen property lines; and pumping water out of excavation sites; and Performs other assigned duties. High School diploma or equivalent Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience; and Valid Driver's License. Position is subject to callback. Class D Water License is required within one (1) year of employment. Knowledge of City policies and procedures; Knowledge of methods, materials, and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of water and sewer lines; Knowledge of standard safety processes, work gear, and procedures; Knowledge of water distribution systems; Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Skill in communicating effectively both orally and in writing; and Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, with co-workers, the public, and elected and appointed officials; Ability to alphabetize and numerically sequence materials; Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with City administration, other employees, and the general public.
