Full-time Job Summary:
The City Of Hamilton Street Department Maintenance employee performs a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks related to the maintenance, repair, and construction of city streets, sidewalks, drainage systems, and related infrastructure. This role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions, operating equipment, and ensuring the safety and cleanliness of public roadways and pedestrian areas. The Street Department Maintenance employee plays a crucial role in maintaining the city's infrastructure and supporting the overall operations of the Street Department.
Key Responsibilities:
Street Maintenance & Repair:
Assist in the repair and maintenance of city streets, including patching potholes, resurfacing roads, and sealing cracks. Perform tasks related to the installation and repair of sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and storm drainage systems. Help with snow removal, street sweeping, and debris cleanup to ensure safe and accessible roadways.
Construction & Installation:
Assist in the construction of new streets, sidewalks, and related infrastructure, including grading, paving, and setting forms. Operate hand tools and power equipment, such as jackhammers, saws, and compactors, to perform construction tasks. Lay asphalt, concrete, and other materials for road construction and repair projects.`
Equipment Operation & Maintenance:
Operate light vehicles and equipment, such as trucks, utility vehicles, loaders, and backhoes, to transport materials, tools, and equipment to and from job sites. Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment used in street department operations. Assist with the setup and operation of traffic control devices, such as cones, barricades, and signs, to ensure safe work zones.
Drainage & Erosion Control:
• Assist in the maintenance and repair of the city's stormwater drainage systems, including clearing ditches, culverts, and catch basins. • Implement erosion control measures, such as installing silt fences and grading slopes, to prevent water damage to roadways and infrastructure.
Emergency Response:
Respond to emergencies affecting city streets, such as fallen trees, flooding, or hazardous spills, in a timely and efficient manner. Participate in on-call rotations for after-hours emergency response, as required by the Street Department. Assist in restoring safe and accessible roadways following emergencies or severe weather events.
Safety & Compliance:
Follow all safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe work environment for self and others. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) as required and adhere to safety regulations when working near traffic or operating heavy equipment. Assist in the documentation of work performed, including completion of work orders, maintenance logs, and reports.
General Labor & Support:
Perform general labor tasks, such as clearing debris, cleaning work areas, assisting with mowing, tree trimming, and assisting other crew members as needed. Support other city departments with related tasks or projects as required. Participate in training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge related to street department operations.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent. Previous experience in construction, maintenance, or public works is preferred but not required. Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting heavy objects, working in various weather conditions, and standing or walking for extended periods. Basic knowledge of hand tools, power tools, and equipment used in street maintenance and repair. Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately. Good communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in street maintenance, construction, or related fields. CDL (Commercial Driver's License) or willingness to obtain one. Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations related to street and roadway maintenance. Bilingual abilities in English and another language commonly spoken in the community.
Compensation:
This is a non-exempt position and is eligible for overtime. Salary range is $34,000 - $38,000.
