PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. Performs scheduled maintenance and repairs. Diagnosis and repair water and wastewater lines. Diagnosis and repair wastewater pumps and equipment. Maintains accurate records and documentation of work orders and repairs. Adheres to all safety rules regarding confined spaces and trenching as related to field. Cross trains in other areas of the City, as possible.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry-level classification in the Wastewater Plant Maintenance Worker series. The incumbent follows routine procedures and guidelines in the application of prescribed duties and works under close supervision with work frequently reviewed by a superior. This classification is distinguished from the Wastewater Plant Operator in that the latter performs more complex technical duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skill.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalent. Must be able to work emergency on-call duty for the wastewater and lift stations.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

Texas drivers license and acceptable driving record. TCEQ Class D Wastewater License, preferred, or ability to obtain within the first year of employment.

Required Knowledge of:

Safety policies, procedures, and practices. Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.

Required Skill in:

Operating a variety of hand tools, power tools, and other equipment. Following written and verbal instructions. Maintaining a professional manner when interacting with City employees and the public. Reading and interpreting maintenance and equipment manuals. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

Reasoning Abilities:

Ability to respond to complaints and grievances posed by the public. Ability to define problems and deal with a variety of situations. Ability to think quickly, maintain self-control and adapt to stressful situations. Ability to use good judgement and effectively problem-solve.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the staff, supervisor, and the public. Ability to communicate in both written and verbal form. Ability to read City policies and procedures, written instructions, general correspondence, MSDS sheets, safety manuals, traffic signs and warning labels.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate basic mathematical calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). Physical Demands:

May be exposed to various weather conditions, potentially dangers tools, equipment, and machinery, heights, and hazardous chemicals. Work may include physical activities such as balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, bending/twisting and performing repetitive motions. Job requires lifting of heavy objects weighing approximately 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distant and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

Dirty environment ((situations in which workers or their clothing can become dirty, greasy, etc.). May work in ditches, trenches or confined spaces.
