GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Under close supervision, this position is responsible for the maintenance, repair and installation of storm sewer lines and cleaning drainage ditches and storm drains. Reports to a Crew Supervisor or Operations Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs heavy manual work in excavated trenches below ground level in the maintenance, repair and installation of storm sewer lines; cleans and re-grades back and side lot, roadside and major outfall ditches using weed eaters, shovels and chainsaws; performs heavy manual work building and cleaning storm drains, removing blockages and other obstructions to clear drainage systems; mixes mortar and lays brick in the construction of manholes and storm sewer lines. Operates heavy equipment to include tandem and single axle dump trucks, crew and utility trucks and other equipment and hand tools; ensures the safety of City equipment, private property, and others by following proper safety procedures, watching for underground utility lines, and checking for traffic; sets out traffic cones and signs according to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD); flags traffic as needed. Performs routine checks and preventive maintenance on equipment; identifies and reports equipment malfunctions; cleans equipment as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Requires a high school diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires satisfactory results from a pre-employment medical evaluation; pre-employment substance abuse testing and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing. Requires a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Must obtain a CDL permit prior to employment and complete the practical portion of the CDL test within 60 days of employment. Must successfully complete the required National Incident Management System (NIMS) Incident Command System Certifications and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Flagger and Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control Certifications within one year of employment. The job is considered Essential Personnel and will be required to work during and following natural disasters and emergency situations.
