Job Description

Department of Public Works Division Streets and Bridges is seeking a Maintenance Worker II to perform manual and some semi-skilled labor involving repairs or maintenance in the general construction, repair, and maintenance of city sidewalks, streets, and bridges and other related duties. The Department of Public Works builds, maintains, and operates the physical facilities that support and enhance the lives of Norfolk's citizens, businesses, and visitors, including the City's Storm Water System, Street Network and Waste Management and Recycling Systems. The Department is comprised of 8 divisions that function collectively to make your commute safe and efficient, your neighborhood more attractive, and the streets and sidewalks clean and well-maintained. The Streets and Bridges Division perform maintenance and repairs of approximately 2,012 lane miles of streets, 968 sidewalks, 1,225 miles of curb line, 58 bridges and waterfront structures within the public right-of-way, and oversees the pavement resurfacing program. The Division of Streets and Bridges perform snow and ice removal and assists in storm debris removal.
Hiring Salary Range:
$43,264-$49,646.44 (Additional $5,000 CDL Stipend upon obtaining Commercial Driver's License) Essential functions include, but are not limited to: . .Performs construction and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, and roadways. Performs permanent repairs to utility cuts. Performs digging, picking, shoveling, leveling materials, and using hand tools in performing general construction and maintenance repairs on City streets and bridges. Operates various hand and power tools. Drives City vehicles, including dump trucks and light construction equipment. Requires normal hearing, peripheral vision, and depth perception to safely work on streets with high traffic volume. Maintains and repairs asphalt by repairing potholes and cave-ins, performing cuts and resurfacing. Repairs concrete, stone or brick areas by removing unsafe curbs, gutters, sidewalks, driveways and roadways, setting forms and grading areas using various equipment and tools while ensuring proper water run-off. Repairs brick or stone by removing damaged brick, cobblestone, sidewalk or roadway, replacing and relaying masonry or cutting stone with masonry saw, stabilizing the base, estimating materials needed, and finishing work. Must be able to operate both standard and automatic transmission vehicles and light construction equipment. Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions given by a supervisor. Must be able to stand, bend, stoop and climb onto construction equipment. Must be able to load and unload equipment, clean work sites, and lift a maximum of 100 pounds. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions, including extreme hot and cold temperatures. Must be able to work long shifts during emergency weather conditions. Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge equivalent to high school or equivalency. One year as a Maintenance Worker, or successful completion of the Operations Apprentice program based on assignment. Preferred License(s) and/or Certification(s): Must possess Driver's License. Must provide a copy of Division of Motor Vehicle driving record (obtained within last 30 days) during the interview. Must obtain a class B commercial driver's license within six months of employment with the City. May require obtaining Pesticide license.
Work Hours:
Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; 40 hours per week every week
