Other Epsilon Systems Solutions, Inc. has a current job opening for a temporary, full‑time, paid Maintenance Trades Intern in Portsmouth, VA.
Job Summary:
The Maintenance Trades Intern will support the maintenance and repair teams working on Navy hovercraft projects by assisting with basic, non‑hazardous tasks and shadowing skilled trades staff. This internship is designed to provide exposure to naval maintenance environments while ensuring compliance with labor laws for students under 18. The intern will observe and learn general shop practices, workflow processes, and maintenance support functions while performing supervised, entry‑level assistance.
Responsibilities:
Assist maintenance personnel with basic, non‑hazardous tasks such as organizing tools, preparing work areas, handling materials, and supporting safe shop practices. Shadow trades staff to learn how mechanical, electrical, and structural maintenance is performed on naval craft. Support general shop operations including inventory assistance, parts staging, cleaning workspaces, and maintaining orderly tool areas. Observe and follow safety protocols, personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, and standard operating procedures. Complete simple administrative or documentation tasks related to maintenance support, as assigned. Maintain clear communication with supervisors and request guidance before performing any unfamiliar task. Participate in hands‑on learning activities that comply with federal and Virginia labor restrictions for minors (no operation of hazardous machinery or tools). Assist with non‑technical project support tasks to ensure smooth daily shop operations.
Requirements:
High school student (ages 16-19) enrolled in a school‑sponsored internship, vocational training program, or work‑based learning curriculum. Ability to follow instructions, work safely, and ask questions when unsure. Interest in maintenance trades, mechanical work, or industrial environments. Ability to work collaboratively in a shop setting with diverse trades personnel. Must comply with all company safety practices and any base access or visitor requirements. Must be able to speak, write, understand, and communicate in English.
Preferred Qualifications:
Enrollment in a VOTECH or technical education program. Prior experience with basic hand tools (non‑operational for minors). Interest in pursuing a future trades, mechanical, or maintenance career.
ADA Notations:
Frequent standing, walking, and working in a shop environment. Occasional bending, reaching, and lifting up to 25 pounds. Exposure to noise, dust, and shop activity (with provided PPE). Regular communication (hearing/speaking) with team members. Vision demands include close, distance, color perception, depth perception, and ability to focus.
