Job Description

The Parks, Fleet and Facilities Division of Shoreline's Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department is seeking a skilled, hands-on professional who takes pride in keeping public spaces safe, operational and welcoming. This role plays a vital part in maintaining the structural integrity and daily operations of our municipal buildings, maintenance facilities, community centers and parks. The City recently opened a new maintenance facility and is completing a multi-year parks capital improvement project adding new infrastructure city wide. Major features include a vehicle wash station, salt brine generating equipment, new public restrooms, boardwalks, spray parks, and irrigation systems. This work directly impacts the quality of life for coworkers and Shoreline residents on a daily basis. The successful candidate will be able to work in a team that is able to shift with changing priorities and work flexible hours to accommodate varying needs.
DEFINITION
To perform a variety of complex and technical construction, maintenance, remodeling and/or repair of equipment and facilities and HVAC systems; to operate a variety of maintenance vehicles, equipment and tools; and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the full journey level class within the Facilities Maintenance Worker series. Employees within this class perform the full range of duties as assigned including the maintenance and repair of systems in City facilities. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives supervision from assigned supervisory or management staff.
ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Functions :
Perform duties in a variety of the building maintenance and construction trades including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, panting, glazing and mechanical trades. Respond to routine and emergency facility requests, perform preventative maintenance, and assist with contractor work. Assure buildings are maintained in a safe condition and in compliance with applicable codes. Monitor vehicle and equipment service and repairs; gather vehicle inspection data and schedule vehicle maintenance. Perform spray park seasonal start-up, monitoring, maintenance, and winterizing. Read, interpret and apply building codes, ordinances and regulations, and ensure that buildings are in compliance. Operate a variety of equipment and tools in a safe and effective manner. Perform work in accordance with safety rules and regulations. Perform heavy manual labor and lift heavy objects. Perform semi-skilled and skilled construction, maintenance and repair of facilities and equipment. Assist in room and public space configurations for meetings and special events. Recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; implement approved policies and procedures including risk management (inspection of facilities and vehicles). Perform snow removal and deicing operations at the City Hall campus. Must be available to work after regular working hours and on weekends, if necessary, when requested.

Knowledge of:
Electrical and mechanical systems. Standard tools, equipment, materials, methods and techniques used in a variety of construction and building maintenance duties and trades. Operation and proper maintenance of tools, equipment and machinery used in the building trades, including electrical testing equipment. Construction and remodeling methods and techniques. Preventive maintenance principles and procedures. Applicable building codes, ordinances, fire regulations and safety precautions. Health and safety practices, regulations and procedures. Requirements of maintaining buildings, facilities and equipment in a state of good repair. Principles and practices of facilities maintenance and repair. Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in facilities mainte­nance. Basic methods and techniques of repair maintenance. Basic methods and techniques of mechanical system installation and repair. Basic math. Record-keeping techniques, electronic and manual. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices. Pertinent federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations. Basic computer skills.
Ability to:
Participate and work effectively in an organization committed to advancing principles and practices of equity and anti-racism. Interpret and work from schematics, blueprints, sketches and diagrams. Perform semi-skilled and skilled-level carpentry skills. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Maintain records related to work performed. Understand and follow both oral and written instructions. Observe legal and defensive driving practices. Conduct routine inspections of buildings, including equipment and facilities. Learn to operate a variety of maintenance vehicles, equipment and tools in a safe and effective manner. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Experience and Training Guidelines Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience :
Two years of increasingly responsible commercial building maintenance and construction experience in a variety of the building trades.
Training :
Equivalent to graduation from high school.
Licenses and other requirements:
Possession of valid state-issued driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Possession of an Aquatic Facilitator Operator certification or the ability to obtain one within twelve months of appointment
Working Conditions:
Will be required to work weekends during the summer months to ensure safe operation of spray parks. Summer spray park operations normally begin on Memorial Day weekend and end on Labor Day weekend but may vary depending on weather conditions.
Environmental Conditions :
Field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease; potentially hazardous chemicals; inclement weather conditions; work around heavy construction equipment; work at heights on scaffolding and ladders; work on slippery or uneven surfaces.
Physical Conditions :
Essential and marginal functions may require walking or standing for prolonged periods of time; heavy, moderate or light lifting and carrying; pulling, pushing, reaching; kneeling; repeated bending; operating motorized equipment and vehicles; mid-range to distant visual acuity for inspecting facilities.

Conditions Of Employment:
All candidates will be required to establish employment authorization and identity at the time of hire. The City is not able to sponsor work visas. This position requires the completion of references checks, including at least one prior supervisor. This position requires completion of a criminal background check prior to start employment. Possession of valid state-issued driver's license with successful results of pre-employment check of driving record with an "acceptable" rating or better according to the City's Using City Vehicles administrative policy.
