Job Description
Dane County Highway and Transportation has a full time (1.0 FTE) vacancy for an Assistant Maintenance Superintendent position in Madison, WI.
DEFINITION
Under general direction of the Deputy Highway Commissioner - Operations, the Assistant Maintenance Superintendent supervises, plans, assigns, directs and monitors the work of large and small groups of employees, e.g., crew leaders and skilled laborers.
Activities include:
planning the work day, ordering materials and assigning maintenance equipment for an extensive system of State and County highways, roads, and streets. When required, temporarily performs Deputy Highway Commissioner - Operations duties in their absence. Monitors construction work performed by private contractors affecting county highways. Monitors utility construction in County and State right-of-way. Trains personnel and performs other related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Organizes, plans and supervises work projects, e.g., ice and snow removal; drainage facilities, surface and roadside maintenance; safety appurtenances; and other road maintenance tasks. Addresses the Public's highway, road and street maintenance concerns. Inspects county, utility, and private contract work. Recommends County and State repair and maintenance projects for budget purposes. Keeps records of time and materials. Works closely with the Shop Supervisor on scheduling and maintaining equipment. Performs other supervisory duties as assigned by the Deputy Highway Commissioner - Operations. Works closely with the Engineering division to coordinate utility, access permits and special projects as assigned.
Education, Training and Experience:
Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to a High School Diploma/GED, and experience in maintenance or construction of roads, drainage structures, or related construction, which can include vocational training or an apprenticeship. Three (3) years of supervisory or five (5) years of lead work experience over crews performing maintenance or construction of roads, drainage structures, or related construction is required.
Certifications and Licenses:
Must have a valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Must obtain a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License for a vehicle with air brakes within six (6) months of employment. Everyone who has a CDL must be registered in the US Department of Transportation's Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.

Special Requirements:
Must have a valid driver's license and access to reliable personal transportation, or equivalent. Must be available for emergency (snow and others) call on a 24-hour, 7-day basis. 50% of the time is traveling in a vehicle and 50% is in a typical office environment.
