Job Description
Overview Humboldt Sawmill Company (HSC) is seeking a Maintenance Superintendent to join their team based in Scotia, CA! This is an exempt position, the base salary for this position is $120,000 to $140,000. Your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic locations, skills, education, and/or experience. Please keep in mind the range published is the full base salary. We also offer a generous benefits package; Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K matching and company paid Life Insurance. The Mendocino Companies (Mendocino Forest Products Company, Mendocino Redwood Company, Humboldt Redwood Company, Humboldt Sawmill Company, and Allweather Wood) own nearly 450,000 acres of Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® C031337) certificated redwood and Douglas-fir timberland, constitute the largest waterborne wood treater in the Western USA, and is the largest producer of redwood lumber in the world. Collectively providing 950 employees and their families with excellent wages and benefits in communities throughout the Western USA. Additionally, the Mendocino Companies own and operate a 25-megaWatt biomass cogeneration power plant and wood pellet plant. Responsibilities The Maintenance Superintendent, in partnership with the Maintenance Manager, will provide strategic leadership for the maintenance department and is accountable for equipment reliability, maintenance performance, departmental safety, workforce development, maintenance costs, and continuous improvement. Duties and Responsibilities To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Provide strategic leadership for maintenance operations across the sawmill, ensuring resources are effectively allocated based on operational priorities. Assist in developing training programs to elevate maintenance team member knowledge and skill levels. Establish succession planning, employee development, cross-training, and technical competency standards for the maintenance organization. Evaluate staffing levels, organizational structure, scheduling, and skill requirements to ensure adequate maintenance coverage and organizational capability. Provide leadership assistance for major planned outages, shutdowns, equipment rebuilds, installations, and commissioning activities. Coordinate maintenance activities with Operations to optimize production schedules while ensuring maintenance work is completed safely, effectively, and within established timelines and budgets. Establish planning and scheduling expectations, backlog management standards, and work-order priorities. Identify performance gaps and lead corrective action plans to achieve established reliability and operational targets. Provide leadership and accountability for maintenance safety performance, including LOTO, hot work, confined space, electrical safety, contractor safety, and other applicable programs. Ensure maintenance activities comply with Company policies and applicable federal, state, and local regulatory requirements. Participate in incident investigations and ensure corrective actions related to equipment, maintenance practices, and reliability are implemented and sustained. Optimize equipment uptime, reliability, and efficiency by analyzing equipment performance data and maintenance practices and implementing improved and/or more appropriate programs, procedures, systems, and enhancements. Manage, implement, and monitor programs including but not limited to: Preventive Maintenance, Predictive Maintenance, Reliability-Centered Maintenance, Condition-Based Maintenance, Total Productive Maintenance and FMEA programs. Conduct analysis and investigations and provide leadership to others in Failure Mode Analysis & Root Cause Analysis on equipment uptime and plant capacity. Report conclusions and make recommendations for improved programs and practices. Develop project proposals with scopes of work and financial justification. Collaborate with counterparts at other Mendocino Companies sites to promote on-going communication concerning maintenance issues and programs. Provides technical expertise to plant personnel on troubleshooting failures, repairs, and evaluating equipment. Qualifications Minimum ten years related progressive sawmill maintenance experience including leadership of other maintenance personnel, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated experience leading a multi-craft maintenance organization in a continuous manufacturing environment. Demonstrated knowledge of maintenance planning and scheduling, CMMS systems, preventive/predictive maintenance, reliability-centered maintenance, RCFA, FMEA, and equipment lifecycle management. Strong project management skills with demonstrated experience managing major repairs, shutdowns, installations, and capital projects. Must maintain and carry a valid drivers' license and remain eligible and capable of operating company vehicles in accordance with company policy guidelines. Demonstrates safe work practices including LOTO, Hot work permits & Equipment Operation. Proven ability to build, train, and certify detailed work instructions. Experienced with pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical controls, as well as machine and machine control design are required. Familiar with OSHA codes. Experience with Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, Database software/Access.
