The Louisiana State Penitentiary is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Maintenance Foreman . This position is responsible for supervising and coordinating maintenance personnel while ensuring the safe, efficient, and effective operation of facility maintenance activities within a correctional environment. The Maintenance Foreman will oversee the maintenance, repair, and preventive maintenance of buildings, equipment, and infrastructure; assign and inspect work; ensure compliance with safety standards and departmental policies; maintain work orders and records; and coordinate projects with institutional staff to support daily operations. This position requires strong leadership, organizational, and technical skills, as well as the ability to supervise maintenance personnel and work effectively in a structured and secure environment. Minimum Qualifications Two years of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been on-the-job experience: Four years of experience or training in the building construction trades, building maintenance, maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment, or park operations and grounds maintenance; OR Completion of a two-year vocational technical program in general building construction, construction technology, or engineering plus two years of experience in the building construction trades, building maintenance, maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment, or park operations and grounds maintenance; OR Twelve semester hours in construction management, construction technology, or engineering, or any combination of these courses plus two years of experience in the building construction trades, building maintenance, maintenance or repair of mechanical equipment, or park operations and grounds maintenance. Job Duties and Other Information Job Duties:
Engages in and/or supervises skilled inmate craftsmen in performing the following.
ELECTRICAL
  • the repair and installation of receptacles, transformer banks, multibreakers, electrical wiring, fans, dishwashing and cooking equipment, security lights, generators, power lines, guide wires, and any other electrical work.
PLUMBING
  • the installation of commercial appliances and plumbing fixtures, water and gas lines, adjustments of gas regulators, and related appliances and fixtures.
CARPENTRY
  • repairing roofs, hanging doors, installing floor tiles, sheetrock, constructing shelves, guard rails, small buildings, and the laying of concrete blocks and bricks. WELDING
  • the maintenance and repair of water lines, calderas, gates, fences, gas lines (includes heavy equipment, and pressure boilers {with assistance of outside vendors}). MASONRY
  • the laying of brick, terra cotta, ceramic and hollow tile, and other building blocks.
REFRIGERATION
  • the maintenance and repair of heating and air conditioning systems, refrigerators, several large walk-in coolers, ice makers and exhaust fans.
Work Environment:
Employee will work with adult male inmates of all custody levels
  • minimum, medium, maximum (death row) and protective custody.

PROMOTION OF A PERMANENT, CLASSIFIED LOUISIANA STATE EMPLOYEE
Current permanent status classified LA State employees may be required to accept a probational appointment if accepted. An employee selected for a promotion may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted. This posting may also be used to fill a vacancy as a temporary job appointment. If filled as a temporary job appointment, should a permanent position become available, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment.
