Job Title:
Maintenance Supervisor Job Description The Maintenance Supervisor leads a team of skilled trades employees to troubleshoot, repair, and maintain complex equipment and processes within a high-volume machining and CNC manufacturing environment. This role requires strong technical expertise, consistent application of national and local labor agreements with a unionized workforce, and sound independent judgment within the framework of Global Manufacturing Systems, with a focus on Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, and Environment (SPQRCE). You will play a key role in supporting the transition to advanced technologies, including electric and autonomous vehicle manufacturing, while driving reliability, efficiency, and continuous improvement across operations. Responsibilities Supervise and lead a team of skilled maintenance employees in troubleshooting and repairing complex mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment. Ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operation of CNC machines, machining centers, and related production equipment in a high-volume manufacturing environment. Consistently administer and adhere to national and local labor agreements in a unionized environment, maintaining positive working relationships with union-represented employees. Use independent judgment within the limits of Global Manufacturing Systems (GMS), focusing on Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, and Environment (SPQRCE) in all decisions and actions. Coordinate preventive maintenance activities to minimize downtime and extend the life of equipment and machinery. Work closely with Mechanical Service Information Development teams and Validation/Labor Time Technicians to ensure all service procedures are valid, optimized, and time-studied. Apply automotive and mechanical knowledge, using multiple source files to identify and select appropriate technical content for use in service and maintenance publications. Support special projects that impact labor time guides, ensuring that procedures, standards, and time studies are accurate and up to date. Adjust manpower and maintenance resources in real time to respond to production issues and maintain throughput in a fast-paced environment. Collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering and Manufacturing teams to resolve equipment issues, improve processes, and support new or modified manufacturing processes. Monitor equipment performance, analyze data, and drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance reliability, quality, and cost-effectiveness. Communicate clearly and professionally with team members and leadership, providing updates on equipment status, maintenance plans, and production impacts. Foster a culture of safety, accountability, and high integrity within the maintenance team, ensuring adherence to all safety standards and procedures. Train, coach, and develop maintenance technicians, promoting technical skill growth, problem-solving capabilities, and teamwork. Manage ambiguity and changing priorities by proactively identifying issues, taking initiative, and implementing effective solutions. Support shift transitions by providing thorough handoffs and ensuring continuity of maintenance activities across 2nd and 3rd shifts. Maintain accurate documentation of maintenance work, time studies, procedures, and equipment histories in accordance with plant and GMS standards. Essential Skills Ability to read and understand electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic blueprints. Strong mechanical aptitude and experience with mechanical systems and preventive maintenance. Experience in maintenance supervision or skilled trades supervision, with at least 1 year of direct supervisory experience. Experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably automotive, with exposure to high-volume production operations. Experience working in or with a unionized workforce, including familiarity with union agreements and practices. Demonstrated ability to adjust manpower and respond quickly to production issues in a fast-paced environment. Interpersonal and relationship management skills to collaborate effectively with employees at varying levels of the organization. Strong critical thinking and analytical skills, with the ability to diagnose complex equipment issues and develop effective solutions. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and manage competing priorities. Willingness to ask questions, take initiative, and be resourceful in resolving technical and operational challenges. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. High level of integrity, with the ability to operate in ambiguous situations and work in a self-directed manner. Ability to work cross-functionally with Engineering and Manufacturing teams to support equipment and process improvements. Data-driven and continuous improvement mindset, using information and metrics to guide decisions. Shift flexibility, including the ability and willingness to work 2nd and 3rd shifts, as well as extended and weekend hours as required. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in machining plants or CNC machining operations, particularly with machine components such as camshafts and connecting rods. Hands-on experience with CNC machines, machining, and machine shop environments. Maintenance technician experience with strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting capabilities. Experience supporting the development, validation, and time study of service procedures and labor time guides. Familiarity with Global Manufacturing Systems (GMS) and SPQRCE principles (Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, Environment). Experience in fast-paced, high-volume manufacturing and production environments, ideally within the automotive sector. Demonstrated management skills, including team leadership, coaching, and performance guidance. Exposure to or experience with advanced automotive technologies, including electric and autonomous vehicle manufacturing processes. Comfort working with technical documentation, multiple source files, and service information systems. Strong problem-solving orientation, with the ability to handle ambiguity and evolving operational requirements. Why Work Here? Work Environment This position is based in a machining plant that specializes in CNC machining operations for components such as camshafts and connecting rods. The work is technical in nature and requires independent judgment within established procedures and Global Manufacturing Systems, with a strong focus on Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, and Environment (SPQRCE). The facility operates in a high-volume, fast-paced production setting where reliability and responsiveness are critical. The standard schedule includes Monday through Friday, with weekend work required. Candidates should expect to work 2 to 3 consecutive weekends before having a weekend off, and there is active discussion about Saturday and Sunday becoming regular workdays, with scheduled days off potentially falling midweek (such as Wednesday and Thursday). Flexibility is essential, as you must be open to both 2nd and 3rd shifts. The 2nd shift typically runs from 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., with an expectation to arrive approximately 30 minutes early and remain about 30 minutes after the scheduled shift. The 3rd shift begins Sunday night and runs from 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., also with an expectation of arriving 30 minutes prior to the shift and staying 30 minutes after. The environment involves working around heavy machinery, CNC equipment, and production lines, requiring adherence to plant safety protocols and appropriate industrial work attire. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Bay City, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $55.00/hr.
