Ice Operations and Maintenance Supervisor Reports To:
Ice Arena Manger Position Summary The Ice Operations Supervisor oversees the daily operation, maintenance, and quality of the ice surfaces while ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the facility. This position supervises ice maintenance staff, manages preventative maintenance programs, and ensures a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for customers. The ideal candidate has strong technical knowledge of ice-making systems, refrigeration equipment, and facility operations, along with excellent leadership and organizational skills. Essential Responsibilities Ice Operations Maintain high-quality ice surfaces for hockey, figure skating, and special events. Operate and maintain ice resurfacing and ice maintenance equipment Monitor and adjust ice thickness, hardness, and temperature based on programming needs. Perform seasonal ice installation and removal. Facility Operations Monitor refrigeration, HVAC, dehumidification, and mechanical systems. Conduct daily facility inspections and document deficiencies. Coordinate repairs with contractors when necessary. Perform preventative maintenance on arena equipment and building systems. Assist with capital improvement projects. Monitor inventory of maintenance supplies, chemicals, and parts. Staff Supervision Hire, train, schedule, and supervise ice maintenance staff. Provide coaching, performance evaluations, and ongoing training. Ensure staff follow safety procedures and standard operating practices. Assist with after-hours and emergency call coverage. Safety & Compliance Ensure compliance with OSHA, local building codes, and environmental regulations. Maintain safety records, inspection logs, and maintenance documentation. Respond to emergencies including equipment failures, injuries, and weather events. Promote a culture of workplace safety. Cleaning & Facility Appearance Oversee the cleanliness and overall appearance of the facility, ensuring a safe, welcoming environment for guests, participants, and staff. Develop and implement daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal cleaning schedules for all areas of the arena. Inspect and maintain cleanliness of locker rooms, restrooms, lobby areas, bleachers, meeting rooms, offices, concessions, and other public spaces. Operate and maintain cleaning equipment, including floor scrubbers, pressure washers, and other custodial equipment. Assist with snow and ice removal around facility entrances and sidewalks as needed to maintain safe access. Promote cleanliness throughout the facility by training staff in proper custodial procedures and expectations. Event Support Coordinate ice schedules with programming staff. Prepare facility for tournaments, practices, and special events. Qualifications High school diploma or GED required. Associate's degree or technical certification in HVAC, refrigeration, facilities management, or related field preferred. 3-5 years of ice arena operations or facility maintenance experience. Previous supervisory experience preferred. Experience operating ice resurfacing equipment. Knowledge of refrigeration systems, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems. Valid driver's license. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong understanding of arena refrigeration and ice-making processes. Excellent leadership and communication skills. Ability to troubleshoot mechanical issues. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Office. Customer service oriented. Physical Requirements Frequently lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb ladders, and work in cold environments for extended periods. Ability to operate heavy equipment safely. Preferred Certifications Certified Ice Technician (or willingness to obtain) CPR/First Aid/AED Certification Typical Work Schedule Full-time Non-Exempt. Typical hours, Tuesday-Saturday 5:30am-1:30pm November - March and Monday-Friday 5:30am-1:30pm March - October. Could include evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call responsibilities during emergencies or major events.
