POSITION
Transportation Mechanic
REPORTS TO
Director of Transportation
SALARY GRADE
$30,044 to $ 31,000
NATURE OF WORK:
An employee in this position serves at the journeyman level in the maintenance and repair of school buses and other automotive equipment. Work exposes employees to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, noise, vibrations, and hazards associated with automotive maintenance work such as fumes, gases, mists, odors, and oils. Work in this class is performed under the supervision of the fleet maintenance supervisor or transportation supervisor and is evaluated as a completed service.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Repairs and replaces equipment for compliance standards. Uses specialized power tools. Assists in fueling buses. Assists in changing tires. Assists in checking buses in and out as required. Assists in housekeeping duties. Performs related duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation or his/her designee.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to learn the uses and operation of various machines that are found in the automotive repair shop. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
SUGGESTED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school or GED certification.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to perform work exerting over 125 lbs. of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motion. Must pass an alcohol and drug test as per USDOT, FHWA, and local school board regulations as required. Continued training for individuals will be required to maintain a bus inspection certificate by the State of North Carolina. Must be able to pass the CDL Class B license and hold tanker permit. This specification has been designated to represent the general nature and level of work found in positions in this class. Performance in this position will be evaluated regularly by the supervisor in accordance with Board Policy.
