PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Assistant Director of Public Works/Parks is responsible, in consultation with the DPW Director, for planning, coordinating and supervising the daily assignments of DPW and Parks employees; including specific personnel assignments. He/she is also responsible for vehicles and equipment needed to successfully and expeditiously complete the daily assignments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Arrives 30 minutes early each day to schedule personnel.
  • Investigation and response to citizen complaints.
  • Daily monitoring of crews.
  • Coordinating materials and manpower.
  • Responsible for purchasing- advance ordering of materials and equipment related to crew assignments.
  • Maintains work logs.
  • Site visits and ongoing communication with Director and Foreman to complete assignments.
  • Verifies payroll and accruals used.
  • Keeping a Maintenance Record of drainage problem corrections, pothole repair, signage installations etc.
  • Shall be on call for emergencies (snow, natural disasters, storms, accidents etc.)- This position is on call 24/7.
  • Coordinates with fleet maintenance on DPW needs.
  • In the absence of the DPW Director, the Assistant will function in his/her capacity.
  • Work with the DPW Secretary and Finance regarding purchase orders and invoice payments.
  • May lead safety, compliance, or regulatory projects on an ongoing basis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • A BS degree, desirably in Civil Engineering, Construction Technology, Land Survey, or a directly related area is preferred. Past employment experience may be considered as a substitute for the education preference.
  • Familiarity with the Town of West Warwick Ordinances.
  • Prior supervisory experience in a union environment preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
  • Knowledge of public works or facilities infrastructure and maintenance operations.
  • Must possess vision to see the big picture.
  • Knowledge of computers and data processing.
  • Ability to multitask.
  • Ability to get along with diverse personalities in a tactful and mature manner.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish credibility and be decisive.
  • Good communication skills, written and verbal.
CDL PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is performed in an office setting and with outdoor work required in the inspection of construction sites, review of crews in the field and site visits to public works and recreation facilities. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus with or without corrective lenses.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet, humid and cold conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level is usually quiet to moderate.
Pay:
$80,000.00 - $87,000.00 per year
