Full-time Work Schedule:
Standard business hours; requires weekends, nights, holidays, and emergency call-outs. Job Summary The Park Maintenance Crew Chief provides vital leadership and supervision for Kershaw County's park maintenance operations, ensuring that public facilities remain safe, clean, and accessible. Reporting to the Park Maintenance Superintendent, this working field supervisor coordinates daily assignments for maintenance crews and contractors to uphold the department's core values of community and stewardship. The role is essential for maintaining the readiness of athletic fields and recreational areas for residents and visitors. By setting high standards for workmanship and accountability, the Crew Chief ensures a quality park experience across the County.
Key Responsibilities/Duties:
Leads and supervises daily field crew operations to ensure park maintenance tasks are completed professionally and on schedule. Ensures athletic fields and park facilities are fully prepared and safe for scheduled games, tournaments, and community events. Maintains high standards of park appearance and safety through regular inspections of grounds, playgrounds, and restrooms. Manages equipment and materials inventory to ensure tools and vehicles are secure, operational, and properly maintained. Fosters staff development and accountability by training personnel on safe work practices and department standards. Oversees work orders and documentation systems to track maintenance activities, incident reports, and corrective actions. Monitors contractor performance and special projects to verify compliance with approved scopes of work and safety regulations. Coordinates emergency and storm response activities to quickly restore park safety and accessibility following severe weather. Upholds public service excellence by professionally addressing resident concerns and maintaining positive community relationships. Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements & Qualifications Experience:
3-5 years of progressively responsible experience in parks, grounds, or athletic field maintenance. Supervisory or crew leader experience is preferred.
Education/Cert:
High school diploma or GED required; Associate degree or technical training in turf management or related field preferred. Valid SC driver's license required; playground safety and pesticide certifications preferred.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in operating mowers, tractors, and power tools; experience with irrigation systems and digital work-order/timekeeping platforms. Ability to perform heavy physical labor and lift/carry significant weight.
