06/19/2026 POSITION SUMMARY The Assistant Director of Facilities and Maintenance assists the Director in the leadership, supervision, coordination, and daily operation of facilities, maintenance, custodial, grounds, warehouse, construction, and related support services for Lynchburg City Schools. Serving as the Director's primary operational partner and field representative, the Assistant Director provides hands-on leadership, oversees daily operations, monitors work quality and project progress, coordinates departmental resources, and ensures the timely, safe, and efficient delivery of services that support well-maintained learning and working environments. The Assistant Director supervises staff; assists with employee training, performance management, safety initiatives, workforce development, and the establishment of a culture focused on accountability, teamwork, customer service, professionalism, and continuous improvement. The position also assists with maintenance programs, capital projects, budgeting, purchasing, emergency response efforts, and regulatory compliance; serves as a liaison among schools, contractors, vendors, and community partners; acts on behalf of the Director as assigned; responds to operational challenges and emergencies; and performs other duties necessary to support departmental goals and the effective stewardship of division facilities, equipment, and assets.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assists the Director in the leadership, supervision, coordination, and daily operation of facilities maintenance, grounds, custodial, warehouse, construction, and related support services. Serves as the Director's primary operational representative in the field by monitoring facility conditions, overseeing work quality, resolving operational issues, and ensuring timely completion of maintenance and improvement projects. Supervises assigned personnel; assists with employee training, performance management, workforce development, and the promotion of a culture focused on accountability, teamwork, customer service, professionalism, safety, and continuous improvement. Coordinates and monitors preventive maintenance programs, corrective maintenance activities, facility inspections, work order completion, and departmental resource allocation. Assists with capital projects, renovations, construction activities, budgeting, purchasing, inventory management, and contract administration as assigned. Collaborates with school administrators, contractors, vendors, public agencies, and other stakeholders to address facility needs and support division operations. Assists with emergency preparedness, inclement weather response, facility-related emergencies, and continuity of operations efforts. Ensures compliance with applicable safety standards, regulations, building codes, environmental requirements, and School Board policies. Acts on behalf of the Director as assigned and provides operational leadership and support wherever needed to ensure the effective delivery of facilities and maintenance services. Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or equivalent required, with significant progressively responsible experience in facilities maintenance, plant operations, construction management, building systems, or a related field, including supervisory or administrative experience. Associate's degree or technical school certificate from an accredited institution in a maintenance-related trade such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, general maintenance, electronics, refrigeration, mechanical repair, construction management, or a related field preferred. Bachelor's degree in facilities management, engineering, construction management, business administration, public administration, or a related field preferred. Minimum of five years of progressively responsible facilities, maintenance, construction, grounds, environmental services, or operations experience required. Minimum of three years of supervisory or administrative experience required, preferably in a school division, public agency, large institutional setting, or comparable multi-site organization. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered. Facilities/Maintenance Service Supervisory experience preferred Technical/on-job training in HVAC-R/Electrical/Plumbing/Trade Skills preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Working knowledge of facilities maintenance, grounds maintenance, custodial operations, construction activities, and related support services. General knowledge of building systems, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, and life safety systems. Knowledge of applicable safety regulations, building codes, environmental requirements, and School Board policies related to facilities operations. Knowledge of preventive maintenance practices, work order management, and facility operations. Ability to supervise, train, motivate, and evaluate employees while promoting accountability, teamwork, customer service, and professionalism. Ability to organize and coordinate multiple projects, work assignments, priorities, and operational activities in a fast-paced environment. Ability to identify facility and operational issues, evaluate solutions, and make sound decisions. Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships with staff, administrators, contractors, vendors, and the public. Ability to interpret plans, specifications, reports, policies, and technical documents. Ability to use technology effectively, including maintenance management systems, spreadsheets, email, and other office software applications. Ability to respond effectively to emergencies, weather events, and unexpected operational challenges. Demonstrated leadership, initiative, adaptability, integrity, and sound professional judgment. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
Building maintenance technicians, grounds maintenance, custodial and warehouse services. Assists with the supervision and evaluation of maintenance supervisors, grounds maintenance, custodial and warehouse services, building maintenance technicians, contractors, vendors, and other assigned department personnel.
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
Reliable transportation, necessary. Daily travel between schools, LCS buildings and local areas, required. Minimal travel outside of the City of Lynchburg, required.
