In addition, the MSS I assists with keeping the elevator in an efficient and operational state. Under close supervision by the Maintenance Manager, the MSS I will help the Maintenance Manager manage preventative maintenance programs, emergency repairs, routine maintenance call outs, and regulatory compliance. Each employee is responsible for their own safe work behavior and the safety of their coworkers. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Performs tasks in a safe manner in compliance with safety programs and procedures. Takes responsibility for own safe work behavior and assists in overseeing the safe work behavior of others. Provides courteous and responsive interaction with vendors, contractors, coworkers and crews. Demonstrates teamwork and genuine respect for others. Supervises routine maintenance and repairs alongside longshore millwrights as well as manages preventative maintenance programs. Responds as needed to trouble shooting callouts. Keeps safety manuals and programs up to date. Assists Maintenance Manager & Safety Director with all regulatory compliance programs (WISHA, EPA, Dept. of Ecology, One Call, etc.) Works in close coordination with Electrical Department. Observes conveyor operations and monitors HMI's, in order to maintain specified operating levels and to detect equipment malfunctions. Observes and listens to machinery operation to detect equipment malfunctions and informs others of equipment attention needed. May perform necessary routine repairs. Required Education and Experience High school diploma or GED degree and/or equivalent training required. 1 to 3 years of experience with grain elevator equipment and operations is preferred. Maintenance experience with mechanical aptitude is required. Ability to see, hear, smell, and talk to prevent and communicate machinery malfunctions. Experience in a lead role and providing oversight and delegation of tasks to employees. Working knowledge of safety hazards and regulations associated with port and grain elevator facilities. Experience working with longshoreman and millwrights with an understanding of union rules and regulations preferred. Must be an effective and respectful communicator both orally and in writing. Must be computer literate with proven ability in the use of spreadsheets, database, and word processing software applications within a Windows-based operating environment. Requires the ability to read, write, and comprehend written and oral operational and safety instructions and related rules, policies, and memo, and communicate clearly with your coworkers and supervisors. Must be able to make decisions, work independently and be detail oriented. Able to express or exchange ideas in English by means of the spoken word to impart oral information to customers, public, and convey detailed spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly. Ability to work flexible days and hours, including some nights, weekends, and holidays. Physical Demands and Requirements This position can be physically strenuous from time to time and there will be exposure to grain dust. Must be able to work in this environment. You will be expected to be able to work in tight and confined spaces, walk, climb, bend, kneel, lift, grip, grasp, push, and pull various tools and equipment. May be required to ride a belt lift and occasionally work at significant heights with requisite balance and equilibrium. Ability to frequently lift, push, pull up to 50 pounds and occasionally more. This job will require the ability to ascend/descend ladders. Personal protective equipment, including hardhats, gloves, safety glasses, safety shoes, and respiratory protection and ear protection are required. Must have vision that permits close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. When grading grain, the ability to identify and distinguish colors is also important. Ability to detect odors and the ability to understand and discern safety warning systems. This is a physical job that includes both indoor and outdoor work in all types of weather/temperatures. Flexible with work hours - must be prepared to receive phone calls and respond to company-related needs at irregular times. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Ability to work in a fast-paced and stressful environment.
