Job Description

Hartselle Utilities provides electric, drinking water, natural gas, and wastewater services to residential, commercial, and industrial customers in and around the City of Hartselle. We are currently accepting applications for a Meter Reader to join our Customer Service team. This position is responsible for reading electric, water, and natural gas meters across our service area. While Hartselle Utilities is in the process of implementing an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system, the majority of meters in our system are still read manually . Therefore, this role will involve traditional route-based meter reading as well as training on the AMI system as it is phased in. Candidates should be comfortable working with technology and adapting to changes in processes and tools. This role requires strong attention to detail, the ability to work independently, and proficiency with handheld electronics and computer software. Meter Readers must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions—including heat, cold, rain, and snow. A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are required to operate company vehicles on assigned routes.
Key Responsibilities:
Manually read electric, water, and gas meters on assigned daily routes Record and input meter readings accurately using handheld devices Learn and assist with AMI meter reading and monitoring systems as deployed Report irregular readings, safety concerns, or suspected meter tampering Drive safely between meter locations throughout the service area Work outdoors year-round in all types of weather
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED Previous experience as a meter reader or with route-based work preferred Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (must be insurable) Ability to complete Operator Qualification Training (OQT) modules and field evaluations Current CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain upon hire Ability to travel for training or operational needs Willingness to work non-standard hours if needed Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and participate in random drug screenings If you're a dependable and adaptable individual who enjoys working outdoors and is eager to learn new technologies, we encourage you to apply.
