This position is part of the team that provides services necessary for human health, economic stability, and overall societal well-being. At the core of the mission of providing these services includes commitment to providing excellent customer service to our citizens, business partners, regulatory agencies, and other county divisions.MAJOR FUNCTION
Performs a variety of customer service field work for water customers. Duties include reading meters and performance of basic and semi-skilled maintenance and preventative maintenance tasks. Field activities are performed independently and require some customer interaction.ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
Document work performed. Locates and reads water consumption meters and records volume used by residential and commercial consumers. Walks or drives truck over established route and takes readings manually and by radio transmission. Conduct site inspection and meter audits and reading verification. Initiate and terminate services. Responds to public regarding inquires, complaints, and/or questions referring matters to the appropriate staff within the Customer Service Section. Inspects meters and connections for defects, damage, and unauthorized connections. Checks on meter functions, meter consistency, and unusual meter conditions. Repairs or replaces faulty meter boxes and lids. Cleans registers and meter boxes. Refuels and performs minor routine maintenance checks on assigned vehicle and equipment. Responsible for the interior and exterior cleaning of assigned vehicle. Demonstrates commitment to customer service, integrity, innovation, efficiency, and fiscal responsibility. Performs related work as required.KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of Polk County areas and city locations Knowledge of how to provide excellent customer service Ability to utilize laptops and other technology equipment, as well as software utilized in the work unit Ability to learn regions, subdivisions, streets, and route locations as assigned Ability to follow oral and written instructions Ability to read maps, mapping equipment and applications Ability to deal courteously and effectively with the public, officials, and other employees Ability to work around insects, reptiles, and animals Ability to read and write legibly Ability and strength to perform a verity of job duties in all weather conditions including lifting and/or interacting with job related appurtenances and equipment which mighty weigh up to forty-five (45) pounds Ability to see colors Ability to perform tasks that require eye and hand coordination Ability to see, ambulate independently, drive, bend, stoop, sit and stand repeatedly and continually Ability to work cooperatively with other employees and the public, often under stressful conditions.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduate of an accredited high school, vocational school or have an acceptable equivalency diploma and have one (1) year public contact work experience which includes meter reading and/or field service experience working outside in water, gas, electric, cable or other utility as well as plumbing, irrigation installation, air conditioning or any other similar industry and two (2) years' experience in manual labor. Must be able to utilize all features and functions afforded by laptops and other technology equipment as well as associated software supplied. Must have a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver's license at the time of employment within this classification. A comparable amount of related training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have home telephone at the time of employment as employee is subject to standby / on-call rotation and is subject to be called in emergencies. This position shall be required to report for work as directed when a declaration of emergency has been declared in Polk County.Similar remote jobs
