Tooling Technician Job Description The Tooling Technician sets up, operates, and maintains molding equipment to ensure molds are clean, properly installed, and fully functional for production. This role involves troubleshooting basic mold issues, confirming that all utility hookups are correct, and maintaining an organized, safe work area. The technician assists with repairs, tests molds for performance, and accurately records all maintenance activities. Responsibilities Operate molding presses and open and close molds to support production needs and repair activities. Set, pull, clean, and inspect molds to verify proper installation, completeness, and readiness for production. Troubleshoot basic mold-related issues and verify correct nozzle length, carriage settings, clamp stops, and safety features. Confirm that all electrical, water, and air hookups function properly and are free of leaks, and test molds for electrical, water, and air performance before release to production. Clean, check, wire, and maintain mold heaters and mold components as needed to ensure reliable operation. Maintain accurate mold maintenance records, including dates, work completed, and responsible personnel. Keep molding machine areas and shop workspaces clean, organized, and safe at all times. Assist Tool Room staff with mold and equipment repairs and promptly report damaged molds or supply needs to tooling leadership. Green-tag molds that meet production-ready standards and complete inspections as required by internal procedures. Follow all safety procedures and immediately shut down equipment when hazards to personnel or property are present. Essential Skills High school diploma or GED equivalent. Valid driver's license. Previous experience working in a technically challenging environment, including identifying, selecting, and using the correct hand, power, and standard shop tools for specific tasks. Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform basic repair and troubleshooting tasks. Ability to accurately identify mold components and understand relevant molding terminology, especially within an injection molding environment. Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills, with the ability to remain logical and composed in ambiguous, fast-paced, and high-pressure situations. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to understand and follow instructions in English. Demonstrated ability to use micrometers, calipers, and gauges to record precision measurements accurately. Proficiency in applying basic mathematical concepts—addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication—to calculations involving whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. Demonstrated dependability, adaptability, integrity, and intrinsic motivation. Ability to work independently under minimal supervision while collaborating effectively as part of a team. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience in injection molding strongly preferred, including practical application of conceptual molding knowledge. Ability to recognize and correctly apply mold-related terminology in daily work. Ownership and provision of basic hand tools suitable for molding and tooling tasks. Comfort working in a hands-on, mechanically oriented production environment. Strong attention to detail when inspecting molds, documenting maintenance, and verifying equipment readiness. Work Environment This role operates in a manufacturing setting focused on molding operations, where you work directly with molding presses, molds, heaters, and related utilities such as electrical, water, and air systems. You spend much of your time on or near the production floor and in the tool room, handling hand tools, power tools, and standard shop equipment. The environment is fast-paced and safety-driven, requiring consistent adherence to established procedures and immediate action when hazards arise. Work areas, including molding machine stations and shop workspaces, must remain clean, organized, and free of clutter to support safe and efficient operations. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Lawrence, KS. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $26.65 - $27.65/hr.
