Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The Service Technician is responsible for the diagnostic testing, troubleshooting, and repair of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. While installers focus on initial assembly, the Service Technician handles the "oddball" challenges of maintaining existing systems, identifying equipment failures, and performing specialized repairs on rooftops, ground mounts, and custom structures.
Daily Activities Include:
Advanced Troubleshooting:
Perform root-cause analysis on failing or underperforming PV systems, including identifying ground faults, "blind" spots in monitoring, and wiring arc-faults.
Technical Repairs:
Replacing inverters, optimizers, and failed modules; performing "one-off" structural or electrical fixes.
Specialized Testing:
Utilizing thermal cameras, IV-curve tracers, and insulation testers to identify hidden faults.
Site Inspections:
Assessing aging systems for safety hazards, animal damage, or weather-related wear and tear. Can include (but not limited to): removal/reinstall, micro/opti swaps, panel inspections, panel upgrades, occasional help with main install crew
Manufacturer Liaison:
Manage the RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) process by coordinating with tech support from brands like Enphase, SolarEdge, Tesla, or
SMA. QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
1+ year of PV installation experience (required) Prior service or O&M (Operations & Maintenance) experience highly preferred. 2 + years of residential electrical experience (preferred)
Panel Mastery:
Proven ability to safely perform live-panel work, wire management, and full panel change-outs (preferred)
Electrical Knowledge:
Strong understanding of AC/DC theory, National Electrical Code (NEC), and safe testing procedures on live systems.
Problem-Solving:
Ability to read "as-built" plans and troubleshoot systems you didn't personally install.
Physical Ability:
Comfortable working at heights, in crawl spaces, and in varying weather conditions while carrying up to 50 lbs.
Tech Savvy:
Proficiency with mobile apps for site auditing and manufacturer-specific commissioning software.
Licensing:
Valid Driver's License and clean driving record (required for service vehicle operation).
