Underground Construction / Field Operations Position Summary AXS Points is seeking a dependable, safety-conscious Utility Locator Technician I to identify, trace and accurately mark underground communication facilities throughout Illinois. Communication facilities frequently run parallel to or intersect public and private utilities. The Utility Locator Technician serves as the first line of defense for underground operations by providing accurate facility markings, recognizing potential conflicts and helping prevent utility damage before excavation begins. Our locating operations currently utilize the Radiodetection RD8200 cable and pipe locator with a Tx-10 transmitter . Candidates with direct experience operating this equipment—or comparable professional locating systems—will receive strong consideration. Paid classroom, equipment and field training will be provided. Qualified candidates must demonstrate the technical aptitude, field awareness, reliability and commitment to safety required to become an independent locator. Primary Responsibilities Operate the Radiodetection RD8200 receiver and Tx-10 transmitter to trace and locate underground communication facilities. Apply locating signals using direct connection, signal clamps and induction methods. Select appropriate frequencies and transmitter power levels based on facility type and field conditions. Interpret signal strength, current direction, depth readings, guidance indicators and possible signal distortion. Verify the target facility before placing utility markings. Locate communication facilities that run parallel to or intersect public and private utilities. Identify potential conflicts between communication facilities, other utilities and planned excavation areas. Review utility tickets, construction prints, maps and available facility records. Locate fiber-optic facilities through properly installed tracer wire, metallic cable components, electronic markers or other approved locating methods. Identify pedestals, handholes, vaults, enclosures, conduits, tracer wires and other visible facility indicators. Mark facility routes using approved paint, flags and utility color codes. Perform appropriate sweeps to identify possible unmarked, mismarked or conflicting facilities. Document completed locates with photographs, measurements, ticket updates and detailed field notes. Report damaged facilities, broken tracer wires, incomplete records, questionable readings and construction conflicts. Recheck or refresh markings when project limits or site conditions change. Communicate professionally with construction crews, property owners, customers and other field personnel. Maintain assigned locating equipment, accessories, tools, supplies and company vehicle. Complete required daily production, equipment, vehicle and safety documentation. Follow company procedures, damage-prevention requirements and safe work practices. Perform other related field duties as assigned. Compensation and Benefits Starting pay of $25.00-$27.00 per hour , based on qualifications and relevant experience. Continued vehicle privileges and employment in this driving position are dependent upon maintaining an acceptable driving record. Schedule, Overtime and Travel This is a full-time, field-based position in Illinois. Approximately 20% travel away from the assigned home office may be required. Qualifying travel assignments are eligible for company per diem. Overtime will depend on project requirements and workload. Early-morning starts, evenings, weekends or emergency assignments may occasionally be required. Employees must be able to report to changing field locations throughout the assigned Illinois territory. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Valid driver's license with a clean and acceptable driving record. Ability to safely operate and maintain an assigned take-home company vehicle. Ability to read basic maps, utility prints and written work instructions. Basic computer, smartphone, email and mobile-application skills. Strong attention to detail and commitment to accurate field documentation. Ability to distinguish colors used for utility markings. Ability to communicate clearly and professionally. Ability to work independently after completing required training and qualification. Ability to recognize when a locate cannot be completed safely or confidently and escalate the situation appropriately. Willingness to travel approximately 20% away from the assigned home office. Availability to work overtime when required by project demands. Dependable attendance and the ability to report to changing job locations. Preferred Qualifications Hands-on experience operating a Radiodetection RD8200 with a Tx-10 transmitter . Experience with comparable Radiodetection, Vivax-Metrotech, Subsite, 3M Dynatel, RIDGID or Pipehorn equipment. Experience using direct-connect, signal-clamp, induction, passive and sonde locating methods. Understanding of peak, null, guidance, current-direction and depth-measurement functions. Ability to recognize signal distortion, bleed-off, coupling and incorrect facility tracing. Previous experience in utility locating, telecommunications, fiber optics, underground construction, surveying or field services. Experience locating fiber tracer wire, telecommunications cable, underground conduit and associated communication facilities. Knowledge of utility-marking colors and damage-prevention practices. Experience documenting locates through photographs, GPS information and electronic ticket-management systems. OSHA 10, traffic-control, first-aid or CPR training. Physical and Work Requirements Work outdoors for extended periods in heat, cold, rain, snow and changing weather conditions. Walk, stand, bend, kneel, crouch and navigate uneven terrain. Work along roadways, easements, construction sites and utility corridors. Lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Safely enter and exit a company vehicle repeatedly throughout the workday. Wear all required personal protective equipment. Work occasional early mornings, evenings, weekends or overtime depending on project requirements.
