BRIEF DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, the telecommunications operator is responsible for answering multiple incoming phone lines, dispatching calls, operating the 9-1-1 system and using the radio during assigned shifts, and providing general information to the public. The operator must be willing and able to work flexible shifts, holidays, and weekends as needed.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing Ability to work with the general public Ability to use radio and electronic data communication devices Ability to handle several tasks at one time, possibly under a stressful situation
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school graduate or equivalent; OR At least six (6) months of equivalent combination of experience and training, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED A
Valid Class C Texas driver's license and the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record Must obtain a Telecommunications Operator License within six (6) months of hire date, including but not limited to the following courses; Course #1305 TCOLE Rules Overview for Telecommunicators and Jailers Course #1013 Basic Telecommunicator Course Course #2120 Crisis Communication Course Course #2809 TLETS/NLETS Basic Operators Course Course #3802 NCIC/TCIC Basic Procedures Course 911 Call Taker training Telecommunications Device for the Deaf
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND SAFETY HAZARDS
Primarily in an indoor environment with the ability to operate outdoors when needed. May be exposed to extreme heat and cold during the summer and winter months.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Standard office equipment including multi-line telephone, two-way radio, multi-channel public safety radio system, digital recording machine, computer, fax machine, copier, scanner, printer, Genovation keypad, etc.
