OSP Field Engineer / Fiber Field Surveyor

•1099 Contractor Vortex Fielding and Engineering is looking for motivated, dependable individuals to join our team as OSP Field Engineers / Fiber Field Surveyors . This is a 1099 independent contractor position with opportunities to work on fiber projects throughout the United States. You do not need prior telecommunications or fiber experience. We are willing to train the right person. What matters most to us is that you are dependable, willing to learn, work hard, pay attention to detail, and take pride in producing accurate work. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working independently, being outdoors, traveling, and having control over their own schedule. What You'll Do As an OSP Field Engineer, you will collect the field information needed for engineers and telecommunications companies to design and build new fiber-optic networks.

Your work may include:

Fielding proposed fiber routes through residential neighborhoods Walking or driving fiber routes and collecting field data Performing aerial and underground route surveys Surveying utility poles and existing infrastructure Collecting measurements and documenting pole attachments Identifying existing utilities and infrastructure Taking photographs and documenting field conditions Collecting GPS/location information Measuring spans and other required distances Recording accurate information about existing infrastructure Working in front yards, along streets, and occasionally in backyards Using Katapult Pro to collect and document field data Following project-specific engineering and fielding requirements Communicating with the Vortex team regarding completed areas, questions, and field conditions You will be working in neighborhoods where new fiber is planned. Some days may involve walking several miles while other areas may allow you to drive between locations. No pole climbing is required. Katapult Pro We use Katapult Pro as our primary fielding software. Previous Katapult experience is a plus, but it is not required . Vortex will provide training for individuals who demonstrate the work ethic and attention to detail needed to succeed. Training is provided, but because this is a 1099 production-based contractor position, training time itself is not paid . Once you begin productive fielding, compensation is based on completed units according to the project you are working on. Compensation Compensation is competitive and based on completed units , with rates varying depending on the project. For reference, current and past projects have included rates such as: $0.06 per foot for aerial fiber fielding $0.04 per foot for underground fiber fielding Approximately $9 per pole on projects paid by pole Rates vary by project, and specific compensation will be discussed with qualified candidates before they begin a project. The amount you can earn is directly related to the amount of work you complete accurately and efficiently. Schedule & Independence This is a full-time workload , but you have significant control over how you complete your work. You will generally be responsible for managing your own daily schedule and production while meeting project deadlines and Vortex's quality requirements. We are looking for people who can work independently without needing someone constantly looking over their shoulder. Projects are ongoing throughout the year. There may occasionally be short periods of downtime within a project while we wait for engineers to draft additional areas, but Vortex continually works to maintain projects and opportunities for our field contractors. Travel Travel throughout the United States is required. Projects may be located in different states and regions, so applicants should be comfortable traveling and working away from home for extended periods when projects require it. Travel requirements will vary depending on the project. What We Provide Vortex provides the equipment necessary to perform the fielding work, with the exception of your vehicle and smartphone.

The cost is approximately $300 , which is deducted from your first paycheck. The Segway then belongs to you. This is completely optional. Contractors may instead walk their assigned routes. What You Need You must have: A reliable vehicle capable of getting you to and between project areas A smartphone capable of running Katapult A valid driver's license The ability to travel for work The ability to work independently Strong attention to detail A willingness to learn Prior experience in any of the following is helpful but not required : Fiber optic construction Telecommunications OSP fielding Utility surveying Construction GIS/GPS Utility pole inspections Engineering field work Surveying Physical & Outdoor Work This is an outdoor field position.

You should be comfortable:

Walking several miles in a day when necessary Working on your feet for extended periods Working in residential neighborhoods Occasionally working along or near roadways Working in both front and back yards Carrying approximately 20-30 lbs. of field equipment Working in hot and cold weather We cannot perform fielding during certain weather conditions because our equipment requires suitable conditions. Heavy rain, significant snowfall, and high winds may prevent field work. There is no pole climbing and projects are generally located in accessible residential areas rather than extreme or mountainous terrain. The Person We're Looking For Experience is helpful.
