Hana Gardens is hiring for a Small Engine Mechanic position at our retail store in Seaside, California. We are an independent, full-service nursery & garden supply business serving the Monterey Peninsula since 2008. Hana Gardens is recognized as the local leader in the garden and landscape supply industry and we are well-known for our high standard of excellence in quality, selection, and professional expertise. We are a full-service shop servicing gas, battery, and electrical landscaping and construction tools. Common brands we service are Stihl, EGO, Makita, Echo/Shindaiwa, Honda, Husqvarna, and more. Types of tools brought into the shop include saws, trimmers, push and riding mowers, compactors, generators, log splitters, etc. Starting pay depends on experience and qualifications. Job Summary Perform skilled mechanical work in the diagnosis and repair of small engines. Provide quality, professional work and on-time service to every customer. This position reports to the Store Manager and other Management personnel. Key Responsibilities Diagnose and repair mechanical problems in small engines. Perform tune ups and preventative maintenance items such as lubrication, adjustments, sharpening, cleaning, and inspection. Maintain service documentation using computer systems for each work order. Perform warranty services according to manufacturer specifications. Communicate status updates to Service Advisor and explain repair procedures to customers. Prepare reports and estimates as requested. Maintain accurate shop parts inventory records and order parts. Maintain a tidy, safety‑compliant shop and properly store tools and parts. Perform other small mechanical repair and facilities maintenance as instructed. Required Qualifications Two years of experience in automotive, construction equipment, and/or other equipment repair. Experience working in a structured service setting (such as a dealership, facilities/fleet maintenance, tool rental, etc.) Knowledge of 2-stroke and 4-stroke engine systems. Knowledge of electrical systems in tool repair. Knowledge of standard repair workflows, diagnostic procedures, and component testing. Ability to use and interpret schematics, service manuals, and other technical documents. Experience with hand and power tools, diagnostic scanners, and diagnostic software. Able to lift, bend, and work safely around heavy equipment. Ability to work independently, prioritize, and manage time. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Reliable and team player mentality. Professional attitude and commitment to quality work. Basic computer and typing skills. Ability to use smart phones, laptops, and computer programs. High school diploma or GED Valid California driver's license Preferred Qualifications Formal technical training, ASE, or mechanical repair-related certifications. Basic welding and fabrication skills. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions Must be able to bend, crawl, work under and over equipment, and lift heavy parts. Must be able to climb onto trucks, trailers, and other equipment. Must be able to work outdoors and indoors in various conditions. Must be able to stand and walk continuously throughout the day.
