Maintenance Industrial Electrician Job Description The Maintenance Electrician safely maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical systems and equipment in a heavy industrial smelter environment. This role works autonomously on routine and complex electrical tasks, using a wide range of testing and measuring tools to ensure reliable operation of motors, PLC-controlled systems, power distribution equipment, and control devices. The position requires strict adherence to plant safety protocols and PPE requirements while supporting continuous operations across rotating or day-shift schedules. Responsibilities Comply with all plant safety protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements at all times. Perform routine and corrective electrical maintenance on motors, generators, transformers, rectifiers, switches, circuit breakers, relays, control equipment, communication equipment, electronic and fluid controls, and power distribution systems. Troubleshoot and diagnose electrical issues on 480V AC motors, proximity switches, limit switches, variable speed drives (VSD), and related control devices. Read, interpret, and apply ladder logic to identify electrical devices and components causing equipment malfunctions. Work with PLC systems, including PLC5 and RSLogix, to support troubleshooting and equipment reliability. Wire and rewire motors, proximity switches, limit switches, VSDs, and 480V motors according to electrical diagrams and plant standards. Use electrical testing and measuring equipment safely and efficiently to verify proper operation and identify faults. Conduct preventive maintenance to reduce downtime and extend the life of electrical equipment and components. Perform corrective maintenance and repairs in response to breakdowns and equipment failures in a timely manner. Handle, operate, and use electrical materials and supplies such as wire and cable, insulating materials, solder, paint, and replacement parts in accordance with safety and quality standards. Support maintenance activities on overhead cranes and ensure their safe and reliable operation. Collaborate with mechanics and other team members to troubleshoot and resolve multi-disciplinary equipment issues. Adapt to rotating shift schedules or straight day shifts as assigned, including working mandatory overtime when operational needs require additional coverage. Maintain accurate documentation of maintenance activities, repairs, and modifications as required by plant procedures. Essential Skills 3-5+ years of experience working as an electrician in a heavy industrial environment such as a foundry, paper mill, aluminum facility, or similar setting. Hands-on experience working on overhead cranes in an industrial environment. Proficiency with PLCs and ladder logic, including the ability to read ladder logic and identify electrical devices causing equipment issues. Experience with PLC5 and RSLogix for troubleshooting and supporting automated systems. Strong troubleshooting skills with 480V AC motors, including diagnosing and resolving electrical faults. Ability to wire motors, proximity switches, limit switches, VSDs, and 480V motors according to schematics and standards. Familiarity with proximity switches, limit switches, variable speed drives (VSD), and related control components. Ability to work autonomously while performing routine and complex electrical maintenance tasks. Safe and efficient use of electrical testing and measuring equipment. Comfort working in a very heavy industrial, dirty, non-climate-controlled environment with areas of high heat. Willingness to work rotating shifts or straight day shifts, including mandatory overtime when required. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience in Navy nuclear operations or other high-reliability industrial environments is highly relevant. Experience in smelting, foundry, paper mill, aluminum, or similar heavy industry. Ability to collaborate effectively with mechanics and other maintenance personnel to resolve complex equipment issues. Typical schedules follow a rotating Dupont-style swing shift with 12-hour shifts from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., including sequences of day shifts, nights, and built-in days off; some positions may work a straight day shift from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., depending on department needs. Mandatory overtime may be required when additional coverage is needed on scheduled days off. The culture is team-oriented and collaborative, with mechanics and electricians frequently partnering to solve issues and a strong emphasis on treating colleagues like family. Dress code includes steel-toe footwear, hard hat, safety glasses, ear plugs, and any additional PPE required by specific departments, all of which are provided by the company.
