Position Summary The Manager on Duty (MOD) is responsible for the overall operation of the shop during their assigned shift. The MOD supports the General Manager with daily administrative tasks, leads the on-shift team, upholds brand and food-safety standards, and ensures every guest receives prompt, friendly service. The MOD acts as the senior leader on the floor whenever the General Manager is not present.

Approximately 30-40 hours per week during the summer season; hours will decrease in the fall as business volume shifts. Must have flexible availability, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Work Location:
Manhattan Beach & Hermosa Beach, CA Leadership & Team Supervision Lead by example and set the tone for a positive, motivated, and professional team atmosphere on every shift. Lead pre-shift meetings to communicate daily goals, review menu updates, and align the team on priorities. Position team members strategically ("aces in places") and adjust assignments throughout the shift to match guest volume. Monitor team performance, provide in-the-moment coaching, and reinforce expectations regarding service, hospitality, and brand standards. Assist the General Manager with hiring, onboarding, and training of new team members. Ensure all team members take meal and rest periods in accordance with California law and Paradise Bowls policy. Uphold appearance, hygiene, and uniform standards consistently across the team. Shift & Operations Management Open and/or close the shop, including unlocking and securing the building at the start and end of the day. Delegate opening, mid-shift, and closing checklist tasks and verify completion before end of shift. Conduct daily walkthroughs to confirm cleanliness, lighting, music, and overall ambiance meet brand standards. Confirm that all workstations are stocked, organized, and operating efficiently throughout the day. Adjust on-the-fly scheduling and break rotations to ensure appropriate coverage during peak periods. Maintain cleanliness and organization across the front of house, back of house, restrooms, dining area, and exterior of the shop. Food Safety, Quality & Inventory Oversee food preparation and quality control, ensuring proper portioning, ingredient rotation, and storage standards. Inspect incoming deliveries for accuracy, freshness, and quality; address discrepancies with vendors and management. Monitor and complete inventory counts; track waste and identify trends that affect cost or quality. Enforce sanitation and food-safety standards, including proper food temperatures, equipment use, and compliance with applicable health regulations (including California Retail Food Code). Place nightly orders for produce, supplies, and other operational needs; communicate low stock or special requirements to upper management. Guest Experience Actively supervise service flow — greeting guests, managing wait times, and supporting the team during rushes to ensure prompt, friendly service. Resolve guest concerns, refunds, and point-of-sale or technical issues professionally and promptly. Build guest relationships and look for opportunities to enhance the overall Paradise Bowls experience. Administrative & Financial Duties Complete vendor invoices and submit to management in a timely manner. Operate the point-of-sale system accurately; count and reconcile the cash drawer and daily deposits. Complete bank runs as needed for change and deposits. Communicate operational issues, maintenance needs, and team feedback to the General Manager and upper management. Perform other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Flexible schedule with availability to work weekends, holidays, and varying shifts. Strong multitasking, organization, and time-management skills. Ability to remain calm, composed, and professional under pressure. Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to give clear direction to a team. Valid California Food Handler Card (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire, as required by California law). Preferred Qualifications Prior supervisory or shift-leadership experience in a restaurant, café, or other guest-service environment. Experience in a quick-service or limited-service food establishment. Familiarity with inventory, ordering, and basic cash-handling procedures. ServSafe Manager or equivalent food safety certification. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, up to the full length of a shift. Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and perform repetitive motions. Ability to lift, carry, and move up to 30 pounds. Ability to work in an environment with varying temperatures (including walk-in refrigeration and warm kitchen areas).
