Position:
Wet Laid Technician (Entry)
Schedule/Hours:
The Production Workers will work rotating twelve (12) hour shifts, 4 On/4 Off, including weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. Job Description The Wet Laid Mill Technician is an integral part of an operational team responsible for the safe and efficient operation of multiple Paper Machine processes supporting FDA, Filtration, Life and Medical Sciences. Technicians are initially dedicated to supporting each Paper Machine (4 Total) and with advanced knowledge, eventually one (1) to two (2) specific Paper Machines. The scope of work includes all steps in production from raw materials through to finished product. Technicians are responsible for monitoring product quality and the routine maintenance of the production lines. Technicians advance based on demonstrated ability and time with the Company. Advancement requires active participation in one's own training and that of others. Technicians are expected to advance their knowledge to meet 'Essential Functions' in fulln a reasonable amount of time (approximately 3 years) and are encouraged to achieve the highest level of learning possible for the Paper Machines afterwards (Machine Tender). The team of Technicians report to the respective Operations Manager via a designated Value Stream Team Leader.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High School or GED equivalent, 2 years college preferred. Computer literate (including Tablets)
Language:
Read, Write, and Speak English fluently
Physical Requirements:
This job requires physical exertion in a heavy, industrial environment.
Examples include:
Standing, walking, stooping, climbing, reaching, twisting, pushing and/or pulling, Exposure to extreme temperatures and wet/humid conditions, and Ability to lift up to 50 pounds Able to work occasionally in dusty conditions, handle chemicals, and around equipment with high vibration. Additional protective equipment required in specific scenarios. Possess a minimum corrected vision of 20/40. Vision to be checked every 2 years. Able to regularly get on and off fork truck throughout shift and safely drive backwards with blind loads. Able to constantly wear Personal Protective Equipment such as: Hard Hat/Bump Cap Steel Toed Shoes/Boots Safety Glasses Hearing Protection
Work Experience:
3 or more years working in a Heavy Industrial/Technical environment preferred. Ideally within Pulp & Paper industry. Familiarity with General Purpose Control Stations such as HOA operations and HMIs including PLC's. Demonstrated mechanical aptitude. Able to use basic math functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). Able to utilize MS Office, SAP and/or alternate ERP System. Strong desire to learn and leadership skills. Essential Functions of the Job Teamwork/Decision Making/Communication Work as a team to help meet or exceed safety, quality, production, and waste goals. Work independently with minimal supervision as needed. Properly communicate with teammates, maintenance and management on machine performance or other concerns. Perform turnover with relief to ensure each shift is working together to complete essential functions. Able to take direction and corrective communications from Peers and Management, e.g. Machine Tenders, Process Engineers, Team Leads. Work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities. Make decisions without precedence
  • contact and work with supervision on unusual situations.
Participate in the development/revision of documentation related to role (work instructions, audits, competency evaluations, etcetera). Provide on the job training when needed for fellow Team Members. Rotate through workstations as assigned to meet staffing requirements and ensure skills are maintained. Safety & Security Understand and comply with Departmental and Company safety, environmental, IT, and general policies. Responsible for own safety and health and ensures that his/her actions will not jeopardize other employees. Corrects and identify any unsafe act or condition to the Team Leader. Follow all Safe Work Permit requirements (e.g. Lock-Out/Tag-Out, Confined space).
Job Related Tasks/Responsibilities:
Perform housekeeping and machine cleaning as required. Basic asset care duties which include routine preventative maintenance (Front Line Maintenance). Properly clean work areas daily and maintain all required pulper, stock chests, and other job-related equipment. Assist in Paper Machine wash-ups, clothing changes and daily Paper Machine cleaning after breaks and shutdowns. Operate support equipment such as: Forklift including use of a Clamp Attachment, Forks, and Probes, Bridge Cranes, Hoists, Hand Trucks, and Lift Tables, Upenders. Maintain inventory of supplies for various work centers. Will require physically handling materials such as core plugs, skids, cartons of cores. Coordinate the flow of finished product from the winders to and from the packing area. Monitor the quality of the product. If product does not meet specifications, work with appropriate production resources to identify and resolve root cause(s). Responsible for the proper packing, labeling and loading of all paper processed in accordance with the customer item directory, packing diagrams, and Bill of Materials. Safely move and store paper, materials, and various supplies throughout the work area, including on/off trailers for internal transport and maintaining related records and labeling. Read, understand, and follow inventory reports, material transfers, or other written instructions for work control and assignments. Track and transport raw materials from inventory for use in pulp and/or chemical formulations. Observe and quarantine, if necessary, any unacceptable or questionable raw materials and communicate to Machine Tender and Supervisor. Operate equipment to defined standards and product specification targets. Prepare raw material formulations in accordance with written instructions. Stage, setup, and addition of raw materials used in the production of the Paper Machine. Accurately record electronically or manually the actual usage of raw materials. Set up, operate and control the rewinding process. Read, understand, and follow slitting instructions, customer item directories, inventory identification tickets or other written instructions for work control and assignments. Thread line for rewinding, adjust slitters, tension, and adjust settings to control process. Troubleshoot equipment utilized in all tasks to ensure safe operations and optimize production.
