Job Description

CNC Machnist/Operator - Heidenhain + CAM - Micro Precision Manufacturing

JN SHAPIRO WATCHES

Torrance, CA Job Details Full-time From $80,000 a year 6 hours ago Benefits Health insurance Paid time off Vision insurance 401(k) matching Employee discount Professional development assistance Flexible schedule Qualifications Personal protective equipment (PPE) use CAM software Machine operation safety procedures CNC toolpath generation Full Job Description CNC Operator / Machinist — Heidenhain + CAM Experience J.N. Shapiro Watches | Los Angeles, CA We make watches in Los Angeles, and we make an unusual amount of the watch ourselves. That means machining parts on a scale that most CNC operators never encounter. Some of the components you'll be working on are almost too small to see with the naked eye. Some of the end mills actually are too small to see clearly with the naked eye. Tolerances, surface finish, tool condition, workholding and process control all matter enormously when a mistake can be measured in microns. We're looking for a CNC operator/machinist who finds that exciting rather than terrifying. More specifically, we need someone with Heidenhain controller experience who can help run our Kern Micro HD and who has enough CAM experience to understand and work with the programs, setups and processes behind the parts being made. This is not a job for someone who simply wants to load parts, push Cycle Start and go home. We're looking for someone who wants to become exceptionally good at machining. Who We Are J.N. Shapiro Watches is part of the effort to rebuild high-end watch manufacturing in the United States. Our team includes watchmakers, machinists, engineers, engravers, finishers and craftspeople working together to make components that, for decades, were almost exclusively produced in Switzerland, Germany and Japan. We take the craft seriously, but we're also a growing manufacturing company. There are production goals, schedules and real-world problems to solve every day. The people who tend to do well here are the ones who enjoy learning, experimenting, collaborating, solving problems and getting better at their trade. We want people who look at an incredibly difficult part and think: "I want to figure out how to make that." What You'll Be Doing Your primary responsibility will be operating and setting up CNC equipment to manufacture extremely small, high-precision watch components.

That will include:

Operating our Kern using a Heidenhain controller Setting up prototype and production watch components Running and monitoring CNC production Making tool offsets and process adjustments as needed Inspecting extremely small components and understanding when something is beginning to move out of specification Working with very small cutting tools and learning the behaviors and limitations of micro-machining Troubleshooting machining, workholding, tooling and process issues Working with CAM programs and helping improve machining strategies and setups Supporting prototype work as well as repeat production Helping us continuously improve how we manufacture watch components Depending on your experience, there will also be opportunities to become more involved in programming, process development and new-part manufacturing, or even processes on the watchmaking side. Heidenhain Experience Is Important This is one of the few requirements we're fairly serious about. Our Kern uses a Heidenhain control , and we're specifically looking for someone who already has experience working with Heidenhain controllers. You don't need to know everything about Kern machines or watchmaking when you walk in the door. You do need to be comfortable around Heidenhain controls and understand CNC machining well enough that we can build from there. CAM Experience You don't necessarily need to be the person programming every component from scratch on day one, but we want someone who understands CAM and isn't treating the CNC program as a mysterious file that magically makes the machine move. Experience with Fusion 360 is helpful, and experience with other serious CAM platforms is absolutely relevant. We care more about whether you understand machining and toolpaths than whether you've used one particular software package your entire career. The Scale Is Different Here If most of your experience is machining large parts, there's going to be a learning curve. That's okay. What matters is whether you have the patience and technical mindset for it. Watch components can be extremely small. Tool diameters can get into sizes where visually inspecting the cutter itself becomes difficult. Tiny changes in runout, workholding, feeds, speeds or tool condition that wouldn't matter on a large component can destroy a watch part. You need to be the kind of person who enjoys that level of precision. A microscope is sometimes as important to what we're doing as a wrench. What We're Looking For We aren't necessarily looking for someone who checks every conventional HR box. We are looking for someone who is really good at machining and wants to become even better. Ideally, you have: Several years of CNC machining experience Hands-on Heidenhain controller experience CNC setup and operation experience Some CAM programming experience Experience with precision metrology A strong understanding of cutting tools, feeds, speeds, offsets and workholding Experience holding tight tolerances The ability to troubleshoot machining problems rather than simply report that the machine isn't working The patience required to work with extremely small components Experience with micro-machining, Kern machines, 5-axis machining, high-speed machining, medical components, aerospace components, semiconductor work or other extremely precise manufacturing is particularly interesting to us. Watchmaking experience is not required . We can teach you about watches. We can't teach someone to care deeply about becoming excellent at their craft. The Kind of Person We Want We're trying to build an exceptional manufacturing team, so we're looking for people who take pride in being exceptional at what they do. You might be a good fit if: You actually enjoy difficult machining problems You notice details that other people miss You want to understand why something works, not just memorize the setup You want to master your trade You go home and want to learn more about machining Your hobbies are making things You like working around other people who are also extremely serious about their craft You're comfortable saying "I don't know" and then figuring it out You care about making something genuinely excellent Put a smiley face in your reply if you actually read this far The idea of helping rebuild an American watchmaking industry sounds meaningful to you There is a tremendous amount to learn here. That's part of the attraction of the job. The Shop You'll be working in a precision manufacturing environment alongside our machining, watchmaking and production teams. You'll regularly work around CNC equipment, manual machines, cutting tools, compressed air, inspection equipment and the normal hazards of a machine shop. Appropriate PPE and safe machine practices are required. The work involves standing and moving around the shop, handling small and sharp tooling and performing very fine visual inspection. Corrective lenses, magnification and microscopes are routinely used where appropriate. One Last Thing We're not trying to build an ordinary machine shop. We're trying to manufacture things in America that almost nobody in America currently knows how to manufacture. That requires unusual machines, unusual processes and unusually talented people. If you're the kind of machinist who is always trying to learn one more thing, hold a tighter tolerance, improve a setup or understand a machine a little better than you did yesterday, we'd like to meet you. Reasonable Accommodation J.N. Shapiro Watches is committed to providing reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities. If you require an accommodation to perform the essential functions of this position, we encourage you to discuss it with us during the hiring process.
