Sparks Position Summary The Senior Machinist is responsible for setting up and operating manual and CNC machining equipment to produce precision components that meet exact specifications. This role requires advanced machining knowledge, the ability to interpret complex shop prints, ensure consistent quality output, and support team development through training and troubleshooting. Primary Responsibilities Review and interpret complex shop prints, work instructions, and specifications Set up and operate manual and/or CNC machines, including setting feeds, speeds, and depth of cut Perform precision machining operations based on part configuration and tolerances Plan and execute a logical sequence of machining operations for job completion Operate multiple machines simultaneously when workpiece cycle times allow Monitor output to ensure dimensional accuracy and specification compliance Install machined parts into machines or equipment and test for functionality and performance Ensure quality standards using precision measuring tools; serve as a point of contact for troubleshooting Train and assist others with: Machine setup Tooling and fixture selection Proper speeds, feeds, and operational limits Perform routine machine maintenance including lubrication, oiling, cleaning, and minor repairs or calibrations Maintain tooling inventory levels for assigned area as required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Extensive knowledge of machining concepts, practices, and procedures, including close-tolerance machining Strong understanding of materials by appearance, color code, markings, and identification of pipe, tubing, and fittings as applicable Ability to review and interpret BOMs, work orders, job allocations, and customer orders Proficient with hand tools, power tools, overhead cranes, and lift trucks Experience using existing tooling and fixtures for machining operations Ability to read, interpret, and communicate: Safety rules Operating and maintenance instructions Diagrams and blueprints Strong teamwork and training skills Solid math skills including: Whole numbers, fractions, decimals Basic trigonometry and geometry Proficiency in various software programs Intermediate to advanced CNC programming knowledge may be required Experience & Education Five (5) or more years of related machining experience and/or training Certification from a college or technical school preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience Physical Requirements Regularly required to stand and walk Frequent repetitive hand and arm movements Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl Ability to lift/move up to 25 lbs. regularly and 50 lbs. occasionally Vision requirements include: Close vision Peripheral vision Depth perception Ability to adjust focus Additional Information This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive.
