Job Description

CNC Lathe Operator Job Description Overview Sets up and operates, under minimum supervision, numerically controlled horizonal lathe to perform machining operations, such as turning, boring, facing, and threading parts. Responsibilities Reads process sheets, blueprints, and sketches of part to determine machining to be done, dimensional specifications set up, and operating requirements. Installs fixtures, tooling, and work piece in accordance with set up sheets, blueprints, sketches, and related technical data. Inspects and replaces cutting tools. Loads program from disc, data base, or other media. Calculates and sets machine controls to position spindle in relationship to work piece and to regulate factors, such as cutting depth, speed, feed, and coolant flow. Monitors machine cycle and makes necessary changes applying practical knowledge of lathe operation. Inspects first run piece and spot checks succeeding pieces for conformance to specifications. Studies job packet and organizes materials for next run during automatic cycles to shorten changeover time. Discusses programming and machining issues with supervisor, engineer, or programming personnel to resolve problems. Positions and moves work pieces using material handling equipment. Immediately informs management of situations that hinder safe or efficient production. Maintains proper care of equipment, including but not limited to, lubricating and replacing consumable components. Must furnish own tools necessary to do the work. Carries out additional tasks as necessary. Experience Knowledge of CNC Lathe capabilities, machinability of materials, and shop math. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, planning sheets, sketches, and related technical data to determine tooling requirements, setup procedures, control settings, and turning methods and sequence. CNC programming knowledge sufficient to adjust feeds, speeds, tool depth, and other minor machine adjustments. Ability to operate material handling equipment. Ability to use precision measuring tools. Applicable CNC Technical School completion, or two years CNC Lathe experience. Or immediately demonstrate skill and ability to successfully operate CNC lathes at the facility.
