CNC Lathe Operator Job Description The CNC Lathe Operator sets up, operates, and maintains CNC lathes in both a climate-controlled shop and an outdoor yard environment. This role involves performing precision machining, making G-code edits directly at the machine, and safely operating material-handling and cutting equipment. The operator works independently and as part of a team to ensure high-quality production, safe operations, and reliable equipment performance. Responsibilities Operate CNC lathes to produce parts according to specifications and blueprints. Edit CNC programs at the machine using G-code to make necessary adjustments for quality and efficiency. Enter and adjust machine parameters using computer interfaces on the CNC equipment. Set up and use overhead cranes, jib cranes, forklifts, and telehandlers to safely move materials and components. Operate band saws, hand tools, and power tools to cut, prepare, and finish materials as needed. Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting on CNC lathes to ensure optimal performance. Follow safety procedures and best practices while working around moving equipment and heavy machinery. Work both indoors in a controlled shop environment and outdoors in a pipe yard as required. Assist team members with machining, material handling, and other production tasks. Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and work instructions to complete jobs accurately. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in both shop and yard environments. Complete required safety, CNC lathe training, and basic maintenance certifications and apply this knowledge on the job. Essential Skills Experience operating CNC lathes in a production or industrial environment. G-code experience with the ability to edit CNC programs at the machine. Computer skills, including entering and adjusting parameters on CNC machines. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings. Proficiency using overhead cranes, jib cranes, and other lifting equipment. Skill in operating band saws, hand tools, and power tools safely and effectively. Ability to operate forklifts and telehandlers for material handling. Strong math skills to support accurate measurements and machining operations. Ability to pass safety training, CNC lathe training courses, and basic maintenance certifications.
Preferred:
2 years of related CNC machining or CNC lathe experience. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience working in both indoor shop environments and outdoor yard or pipe yard settings. Familiarity with working around moving equipment and heavy machinery. Comfort working in conditions that may include occasional high noise levels, dust, and fumes. Ability to adapt to different shifts, including initial training on one shift and transition to another. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work. Work Environment The work environment includes an enclosed, climate-controlled shop and an outdoor storage yard, providing a mix of indoor and outdoor tasks. Conditions may occasionally include high noise levels, dust, and fumes such as fuel or exhaust, and there may be exposure to inclement weather while working outside. The position follows a structured schedule, with primary work on 2nd shift from 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., Monday through Friday, and initial training on 1st shift from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for approximately 2-3 weeks. Appropriate work attire is expected to support safety and comfort in both shop and yard settings. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Justin, TX. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $28.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
