JACO ENGINEERING
Precision Machining for the Aerospace & Defense Industries — Anaheim, California CNC Mill Programmer — Mastercam / 5-Axis Mastercam
  • 3, 4 & 5-Axis Milling
  • Precision Aerospace Parts
  • Full Time, On-Site (Anaheim, CA) Full position title: Machinist / Programmer / Applications Engineer
POSITION SUMMARY
Jaco Engineering is an established Anaheim precision machine shop producing close-tolerance machined components for the aerospace and defense industries. Our parts support many U.S. aerospace and defense systems. Our firm is well established, stable, and growing, with a steady backlog and a permanent full-time need. We are seeking a Machinist / Programmer / Applications Engineer to program, prove out, and continuously improve our milling work in Mastercam. The center of this job is CNC programming of precision machined parts on 3, 4, and 5-axis mills. Beyond programming, you are our applications resource: the person who develops and documents how a part gets made, evaluates cutting tools and workholding, runs the test cuts, and helps us decide what tooling and equipment we buy next. This is a hands-on role — you should understand setup and workholding well enough to stand at the machine and make a part right. We are looking for either a programmer who came up through the shop, or an engineering graduate with real Mastercam and machine shop experience. You will work directly with machinists, planning, and quality to keep close-tolerance aerospace work moving.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES CNC
Programming Program 3-axis, 3+2 positional, and true simultaneous 5-axis milling operations in Mastercam for vertical and horizontal machining centers. Work directly from customer-supplied 3D CAD models — import, investigate, and verify solid and surface geometry, and build toolpaths that hold the model to print requirements. Build accurate 3D models in Mastercam from customer-supplied 2D machined-part drawings when no model is provided, and program from those models. Review and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T callouts, parts lists, and customer specifications to identify every required feature, tolerance, and finish before programming. Develop and modify existing CNC programs, post-process, verify, and prove out programs at the machine to produce a good First Article part. Work with Mastercam post processors — select the correct post for a given machine and control, verify posted output, and troubleshoot or request post corrections when the NC code does not match machine requirements. Create shop aid sketches and setup sheets for roughing, finishing, and second operations. Support machinists hands-on at the machine — loading and validating programs, tooling, and part holding, and correcting program or tooling problems as they arise. Applications & Process Development Develop, document, and improve the machining process for new and repeat parts — methods, operation sequence, workholding strategy, and cutting parameters — and capture what works so the next run starts from proven ground. Drive measurable improvement in cycle time, tool life, and part quality across our milling work, not only on the job in front of you. Evaluate and recommend cutting tools, tool holders, and workholding: research options, work with tooling vendors and applications reps, run and document test cuts, and make the buy recommendation. Design and specify workholding, fixtures, and tooling; select cutters, holders, speeds, and feeds appropriate to close-tolerance aerospace alloys. Evaluate machine tool capability against the work we quote and run, and support recommendations for new machine tool, control, and shop equipment purchases. Serve as the in-house Mastercam applications resource — evaluate new modules and releases, establish programming best practices, and mentor others on the software and on machining method. Provide machining time estimates for setup and per-part run time on new and repeat work in support of planning and quoting. Documentation & Data Control Maintain and organize the 3D model library, CNC program library, sketches, and tooling records under revision control and in compliance with customer and company procedures. Enforce and follow company standard operating procedures for file naming, file storage, and revision control across all models, Mastercam files, and programs. Manage backup of machine NC code, ensuring current proven programs are captured, correctly named, stored in the proper location, and recoverable.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
One of the two following paths: - Experience path: minimum five (5) years of hands-on experience programming CNC mills in a precision machining environment; or - Engineering path: a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering or a closely related technical field, combined with demonstrated Mastercam programming ability and real machine shop experience. Demonstrated proficiency with Mastercam — you must be able to build a program from scratch, not simply edit existing ones. Proven simultaneous 5-axis and 3+2 milling programming experience on vertical and horizontal machining centers. Working knowledge of machine shop practices — setup, workholding, fixturing, tool selection, and how a part is held, cut, and how it moves in process. We want a programmer who has actually stood at a machine and cut parts. Ability to program directly from customer-supplied 3D CAD models, including imported STEP, IGES, Parasolid, CATIA, and
SOLIDWORKS
geometry. Ability to create 3D models in Mastercam from 2D machined-part drawings and then to program from those models. Strong working knowledge of GD&T and the ability to read and interpret
ANSI/ASME Y14.5
engineering drawings. Working knowledge of cutting tools, tool holders, speeds, and feeds for close-tolerance machining of aircraft alloys and hardened materials. Working knowledge of G code and common controls such as Fanuc, Siemens Cellos, or Mazatrol, with the ability to edit at the machine. Experience designing tooling and holding fixtures for machined parts. Ability to communicate clearly and constructively with machinists and production staff, give instructions, and mentor in a team environment.
Basic computer proficiency:
email, MS Excel logs, network file management, and PDF handling. Functional English — able to speak, read, and write English well enough to interpret drawings, specifications, and written procedures and to document work clearly. U.S. Citizen or U.S. Person as defined under ITAR (22 CFR 120.62) — required for access to controlled technical data on U.S. Government defense contracts.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience machining aircraft-grade alloys to close tolerances — aluminum, stainless, titanium, and high-temperature and heat-treated alloys. Strongly desired. An engineering or related technical degree. Desired for all candidates, including those entering on the experience path. Experience in an AS9100-certified aerospace or defense machine shop. Experience with Mastercam Multiaxis, Dynamic Motion, and machine simulation or Vericut verification. Mastercam, SOLIDWORKS or CATIA modeling experience, including creating internal drawings and shop aids and converting CATIA files to IGES or STEP. Prior applications engineering, process engineering, or manufacturing engineering experience in a machining environment. Estimating and planning experience — quoting setup and run times for new and repeat parts. CNC lathe programming experience, including multi-spindle and live tooling. Helpful, but not required. Familiarity with first article inspection, model-based definition, or DPD requirements.
SCHEDULE, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Full-time, on-site, permanent position in our air-conditioned machine shop with a dedicated programming office. First shift, Monday through Thursday, four ten-hour days (4/10 schedule). Option to work five eight-hour days. Overtime available. Competitive pay based on experience, education, and demonstrated Mastercam programming ability. The listed pay is a starting point. Company-paid medical and dental coverage after 90 days. Paid holidays, vacation, and PTO, including sick days. 401(k) retirement plan. Stable, long-established and growing shop with a steady aerospace and defense customer base.
HOW TO APPLY
To be considered, please reply with a current resume detailing your work history and education, the Mastercam versions and machine tools you have programmed, the types of parts, materials, and tolerances you have worked to, your hands-on machining experience, any tooling or process development work you have done, a contact number, and your salary requirements.
