Full-Time | Shop Position Position Summary As an Industrial Painter, you will prepare, blast, prime, and paint structural steel components for commercial and industrial projects. You'll work with fabrication and quality teams to ensure coatings meet project specifications while maintaining production schedules, safety standards, and exceptional workmanship. Key Responsibilities Prepare steel surfaces through abrasive blasting, grinding, sanding, power tool cleaning, and chemical cleaning as required. Apply primers, intermediate coats, and finish coats using airless spray equipment, conventional spray systems, brushes, and rollers. Read and interpret coating specifications, shop drawings, work orders, and manufacturer technical data sheets (TDS) to ensure compliance. Measure and document dry film thickness (DFT), surface cleanliness, and other quality requirements using appropriate inspection tools. Mask and protect areas not requiring coating and perform touch-up work as needed. Inspect completed work to verify coating quality and adherence to project specifications. Perform routine cleaning and preventative maintenance on painting and blasting equipment. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including paint booths and blasting areas. Follow all company safety policies, wear required PPE, and actively participate in safety meetings. Work closely with welders, fitters, inspectors, and supervisors to support production goals and maintain quality standards. Qualifications Minimum of 3 years of industrial or structural steel painting experience in a fabrication shop or industrial environment. Experience with abrasive blasting, including equipment setup, operation, and cleanup. Proficient with airless spray equipment and conventional spray systems. Working knowledge of
SSPC, AMPP
(formerly
SSPC/NACE
), or equivalent surface preparation and coating standards. Experience using dry film thickness (DFT) gauges and other coating inspection tools. Ability to read shop drawings, work orders, and coating specifications. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work. Ability to work independently while contributing to a team-oriented environment. Valid driver's license preferred. Coating certifications such as
AMPP/SSPC
PA1, C1, NACE, or manufacturer certifications are a plus. Work Environment & Physical Requirements Shop environment with exposure to paint, blasting media, dust, fumes, and industrial equipment. Day shift with occasional overtime based on production needs. Ability to stand, walk, bend, climb, and work at heights as needed. Ability to frequently lift and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment when necessary.
