Job Title:
Industrial Painter Job Description This role focuses on preparing, finishing, and protecting a wide range of metal components using industrial painting techniques and equipment. You will work with aluminum, ferrous metals, stainless steel, and other materials, applying coatings that meet strict specification and Mil Spec requirements. The position involves operating spray systems, mixing coatings, maintaining a clean and safe paint environment, and contributing to an efficient, quality-focused production process. Responsibilities Prepare and paint a variety of surfaces including aluminum, ferrous metals, stainless steel, and other specified materials, ensuring proper protection, priming, and finish coatings to meet Mil Spec and production requirements. Apply industrial coatings using pressure pot spray systems and spray guns, including enamel, acrylic, and epoxy, to manufactured products for protective and aesthetic finishes. Select, mix, and tint coating paints to the desired color and consistency, including mixing two-part epoxy and 1:1 ratio paints, and set up, clean, and adjust spray equipment for optimal performance. Assist in rigging and safely moving large components and assemblies to facilitate proper access and coverage during the industrial coating process. Perform metal surface preparation using techniques such as sanding, media blasting, chemical etching, and degreasing to ensure proper adhesion and finish quality. Read and interpret production information and specification details, then organize and execute painting tasks to meet required standards, deadlines, and quality expectations. Maintain the paint mix room and paint booth in a clean, organized, and compliant condition, following all company safety policies and procedures. Manage inventory for painting operations, monitor material usage, and order supplies as needed to support continuous production. Serve as a department lead for painting operations when required, reporting status into production, managing workflow autonomously, and coordinating tasks to keep jobs on schedule. Measure and calculate paint coverage and film thickness to ensure coatings meet specified requirements and quality standards. Perform paint preparation activities such as masking, sanding, cleaning, and staging parts to optimize efficiency and finish quality. Collaborate with a motivated production crew, communicate effectively with team members, and contribute to a culture of teamwork and continuous improvement. Essential Skills Hands-on industrial painting experience with steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and other ferrous metals. Proficiency using pressure pot spray systems and spray guns for applying protective coatings. Ability to mix coatings accurately, including 1:1 ratio paints and two-part epoxy systems. Knowledge of metal surface preparation techniques such as sanding, media blasting, chemical etching, and degreasing. Capability to read and assess production information and specification details to determine required coating processes. Experience working in and maintaining a paint booth and paint mix room in accordance with safety policies. Skill in calculating and verifying paint coverage and film thickness to meet specification requirements. Strong organizational skills to complete tasks efficiently, to the correct standard, and within required time frames. Ability to manage painting workflow autonomously and report status to production teams. Attention to detail and commitment to consistent, high-quality finishes. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience with pressure pot spray systems is a plus but not required. Experience with metals preparation, including cleaning, sanding, and masking, is highly beneficial. Industrial painting within a manufacturing or machine shop environment. Comfort working as a department lead or head, coordinating tasks and supporting team productivity. Ability to work effectively as part of a motivated crew that values teamwork and mutual development. Work Environment The role is based in a very clean and organized machine shop that produces power manifolds for the hydraulic and dam power industry. You will primarily work in the paint department and inside the paint booth, using industrial spray equipment, pressure pot systems, and related tools. The shop features new, well-maintained tooling and a motivated crew that values teamwork and helping one another improve. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Portland, OR. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $28.00/hr.
