Painter (Industrial Coatings Technician)

None (unless designated as Lead Painter) Position Summary The Painter (Industrial Coatings Technician) is responsible for surface preparation and application of protective and decorative coatings to fabricated steel components in accordance with project specifications, coating manufacturer requirements, and company quality standards. The Painter performs coating operations and surface preparation tasks but does not supervise production personnel, modify engineering specifications, establish coating system requirements, or manage project financial performance. Primary Responsibilities 1. Surface Preparation Prepare steel surfaces through: Solvent cleaning Grinding Power tool cleaning Abrasive blasting (if trained and certified) Ensure surfaces meet required cleanliness standards (e.g., SSPC/NACE specifications as applicable) Mask areas not designated for coating Verify surfaces are free of contaminants prior to coating 2. Coating Application Apply primers, intermediate coats, and topcoats using: Airless spray systems Conventional spray equipment Brush and roller (as required) Mix coatings in accordance with manufacturer specifications Monitor environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, dew point) Apply coatings to required mil thickness 3. Quality Compliance Measure wet and dry film thickness using appropriate gauges Inspect coated surfaces for defects Perform touch-up work as required Ensure coatings meet project specifications and finish requirements Maintain required documentation for coating applications 4. Equipment Maintenance Clean and maintain spray equipment Perform routine maintenance on blasting and coating equipment Store coatings and materials according to safety guidelines Report equipment malfunctions to supervision or Maintenance 5. Material Handling Move and stage materials for coating operations Coordinate with Production for timing of finished assemblies Assist with loading coated materials when required 6. Safety & Environmental Compliance Follow PPE requirements for coating and blasting operations Use proper respiratory protection as required Comply with ventilation and containment procedures Follow hazardous material handling protocols Participate in safety meetings and required training Authority & Decision-Making Scope The Painter has authority to: Stop coating operations if environmental conditions are outside specification Reject improperly prepared surfaces Report specification discrepancies Refuse unsafe work conditions All production priorities and coating schedules are directed by supervisory personnel. Role Boundaries (Where the Role Ends) The Painter does not have responsibility for: Selecting or altering coating systems without approval Supervising production staff Approving production schedules Managing project budgets Negotiating coating specifications with clients Approving overtime Making purchasing decisions Establishing company-wide safety policy Coating system approval remains with Project Management or Engineering. Operational control remains with Production Management. Performance Metrics (KPIs) Coating quality and defect rate Film thickness accuracy Rework percentage On-time completion of coating tasks Safety compliance Equipment maintenance compliance
