Job Description
Controls EngineerPosition OverviewWe are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to design, program, commission, and maintain control systems for industrial automation projects. The role focuses on PLC, HMI, DCS, SCADA and robotics systems to improve reliability, safety and performance of manufacturing and process equipment. The Controls Engineer will collaborate with project teams, electrical and mechanical engineers, vendors and technicians to deliver turnkey automation solutions from concept through testing and handover.
Key ResponsibilitiesDesign, develop and commission control systems using PLCs, HMIs, DCS and SCADA platforms for manufacturing and process automation projects.
Program and debug PLC logic (ladder, structured text, function block), HMI screens and SCADA applications; implement control strategies and interlocks.
Integrate and program industrial robots (e.g., Fanuc, ABB, KUKA) including motion profiles, safety zones and communication with PLC/DCS systems.
Develop and maintain networking and fieldbus configurations (EtherNet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, Profinet) and ensure reliable communication between devices.
Perform factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), commissioning, start-up support and troubleshooting on-site and remotely.
Create, review and maintain clear documentation including control narrative, I/O lists, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, test procedures and as-built drawings.
Implement and verify safety systems and standards (E-stop, interlocks, safety PLCs, safety relays) and follow applicable codes and best practices.
Support continuous improvement initiatives, perform root cause analysis, propose corrective actions and optimize control loops and automation performance.
Provide technical guidance to technicians, contractors and cross-functional project teams; coordinate with vendors for drives, DCS modules and robotic cells.
Estimate effort for control scopes, contribute to project schedules and ensure deliverables are completed on time and within budget.
QualificationsBachelors degree in Electrical, Control, Mechatronics or related Engineering field (or equivalent experience).3+ years of hands-on experience designing and commissioning industrial control systems with strong experience in PLCs, HMIs, DCS and SCADA.Proven experience programming and troubleshooting PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar); proficiency with
Experience with industrial robotics programming and integration (Fanuc, ABB, KUKA or equivalent) and motion control concepts.
Practical knowledge of SCADA platforms and HMI design tools (Wonderware, Ignition, Citect, FactoryTalk, etc.).Familiarity with DCS systems (Emerson DeltaV, Honeywell, Yokogawa or similar) and process control fundamentals (PID tuning, batching, interlocks).Strong understanding of industrial networks and communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, Profinet), cybersecurity basics for OT environments preferred.
Experience performing FAT/SAT, commissioning, and on-site troubleshooting; ability to travel to customer sites as required.
Excellent technical documentation skills, strong problem-solving ability and effective communication skills for team and client interactions.
Certifications in PLC programming, robotics, or functional safety (e.g., Certified Automation Professional, TV functional safety) are a plus.
