Job Description

Location:
Provo, UT Reports to: Factory Automation Engineering Manager The Opportunity We are seeking a highly strategic and technically adept Controls Technician Manager to lead our automation maintenance department at our brand-new, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Provo. This is a foundational leadership role; it's an opportunity to build, scale, and define a culture of technical excellence and operational reliability from the ground up. Reporting to the Factory Automation Engineering Manager, you will direct a department of specialized technicians and team leads dedicated to the reliability, functionality, and optimization of our cutting-edge robotics and automation systems. You will balance deep technical expertise with high-level strategic planning, budget management, and departmental leadership to ensure our facility operates at peak efficiency.
What You'll Do Leadership & Strategy Departmental Management:
Direct, mentor, and scale a team of Controls Technicians and Shift Leads. Define departmental KPIs and foster a culture of continuous learning, accountability, and safety.
Process Engineering:
Develop and execute high-level, data-driven initiatives to minimize equipment downtime, optimize cycle times, and extend asset lifecycles.
Cross-Functional Liaison:
Serve as a strategic partner to the Engineering and Operations teams, leading integration for site projects, negotiating with vendors, and overseeing the commissioning of new capital equipment.
Operational Oversight:
Act as the ultimate point of escalation for critical machine downtime, coordinating rapid-response troubleshooting and directing root-cause analysis investigations.
Technical Execution Reliability Excellence:
Design, implement, and audit a comprehensive Preventive and Predictive Maintenance (PM/PdM) program utilizing our CMMS.
Advanced Diagnostics:
Provide high-level guidance and oversight on complex diagnostics involving PLCs, SCADA systems, industrial networking, and robotics.
Safety & Compliance Leadership:
Champion safety culture. Ensure all departmental work adheres to strict OSHA standards, PPE requirements, and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) protocols.
Systems Documentation:
Mandate and oversee accurate record-keeping for equipment calibrations, compliance inspections, and repair histories across the facility.
What We're Looking For Experience:
7+ years in industrial controls, automation engineering, or manufacturing maintenance, with at least 4 years in a direct management or senior leadership capacity.
Technical Mastery:
High-level proficiency in PLC programming/troubleshooting (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens), SCADA interfaces, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and industrial communication protocols.
Schematic Literacy:
Expert ability to read, interpret, and red-line complex electrical, pneumatic, and P&ID drawings.
Systems Knowledge:
Advanced experience utilizing and configuring CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems) to track assets, analyze downtime data, and optimize labor allocation.
Strategic Problem Solver:
A proactive mindset focused on continuous improvement. You implement systemic solutions to root causes rather than just treating symptoms.
Communication:
Exceptional executive-level verbal and written communication skills; ability to translate complex technical data into actionable business insights for senior leadership.
Physical Requirements & Environment Physical Agility:
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, navigate confined spaces, and remain active on the factory floor for extended periods when evaluating processes or assisting during critical escalations.
Flexibility:
Willingness to be on-call or work occasional off-shift hours to support major production milestones, oversee critical equipment shutdowns, or manage high-priority emergency events.
Bonus Points For Advanced Education/Certifications:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related field; or equivalent Journeyman Electrician license.
Process Improvement:
Lean Six Sigma Black Belt or proven experience implementing TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) programs.
Robotics:
Advanced Fanuc/ABB robotics programming and integration certifications.
Advanced Safety:
Experience leading facility-wide safety audits or developing EHS (Environmental, Health, and Safety) protocols.

Pay:
$95,200.00 - $112,000.00 per year
