Custom Control Panel Wiring Technician The Custom Control Panel Wiring Technician is a senior-level position for a highly skilled assembler capable of independently leading complex assembly projects, including custom panel fabrication and troubleshooting. This position is responsible for fabricating complex assemblies and sub-assemblies, including wiring harnesses and terminal block strips, with or without documented instructions or templates. The Custom Control Panel Wiring Technician serves as a technical resource for the assembly team, supports workflow planning, and may oversee complex projects or specialty panels. This role also provides occasional customer support related to assembly specifications and is responsible for ensuring assigned assemblies meet UL 508A and other applicable standards.
Responsibilities:
Independently assemble standard and custom electrical panels and sub-assemblies according to project requirements. Fabricate complex assemblies, including wiring harnesses, terminal block strips, and specialty assemblies, with or without predefined instructions or templates. Verify pick tickets, part numbers, and components against project bills of materials (BOMs). Develop and modify complex panel layouts to ensure proper component fit, spacing, accessibility, and compliance with applicable standards. Lay out panels without a predefined layout drawing when required. Read and interpret complex electrical drawings and identify missing or incomplete information necessary to complete a panel. Install components and complete panel wiring accurately according to project requirements and applicable standards. Identify drawing errors, recommend corrections, and make appropriate modifications when authorized. Troubleshoot complex assembly and wiring issues and determine appropriate solutions. Verify assembly quality and ensure completed work meets UL 508A and other applicable standards. Perform quality checks on colleagues' work as assigned. Serve as a technical mentor and resource for other panel assemblers. Support the Panel Shop Manager with workflow planning and technical guidance. Lead or oversee complex projects and specialty panels as assigned. Provide occasional customer support and professionally address questions related to assembly specifications. Complete required paperwork accurately and follow established panel closeout procedures. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area. Follow company safety procedures and demonstrate proper use of hand and power tools.
Qualifications:
5+ years of experience in panel assembly, electrical assembly, or a related field. High school diploma or equivalent preferred, but not required. In-depth understanding of electricity and electrical components. Advanced ability to read and design complex panel layout drawings and bills of materials. Ability to develop panel layouts without predefined drawings and modify existing layouts to accommodate components while maintaining adequate spacing. Ability to read and interpret complex electrical drawings and complete missing information required for panel assembly. Strong understanding of the operation and application of electrical components, including: Relays Transformers Power supplies Controllers Ability to identify drawing errors and recommend appropriate corrections. Ability to independently complete assigned projects and tasks without direct supervision. Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills. Knowledge of UL 508A requirements and applicable panel-building standards. Ability to pass the
UL 508A MTR
exam. Basic understanding and safe operation of common hand tools, including: Screwdrivers Wire strippers Drill motors Pliers and cutters Measuring tools Ability to lift and handle materials weighing up to 40 pounds. Ability to stand, bend, reach, and perform repetitive assembly tasks as required.
