Job Title:
1st Shift Mechanical Assembler Job Description The Mechanical Assembler produces highly engineered, specialized, and innovative maintenance-of-way equipment for rail-related markets by performing complex mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic assembly. This role uses a variety of tools and equipment, including overhead cranes and jibs, to build and assemble machinery to specification. This is a project-based position expected to run through mid-December. Responsibilities Assemble highly engineered maintenance-of-way equipment for rail-related applications using mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic assembly techniques. Interpret and work from blueprints, schematics, and written instructions to complete assemblies accurately and efficiently. Use hand tools, power tools, and measuring devices to fit, fasten, and assemble components and subassemblies. Install, connect, and route hydraulic and pneumatic lines and components according to specifications. Perform mechanical assembly tasks related to diesel equipment and systems as required. Assist with basic electrical tasks, including wiring and routing cables, in support of the assembly process. Operate overhead cranes and jibs to safely lift, move, and position heavy parts and assemblies. Inspect completed assemblies to verify proper fit, alignment, and operation, and make adjustments as needed. Follow all safety procedures and guidelines while using tools, equipment, and lifting devices. Maintain a clean and organized work area and properly store tools and equipment at the end of each shift. Collaborate with team members and supervisors to resolve assembly issues and meet production goals. Essential Skills At least 2 years of experience as a diesel mechanic or in mechanical assembly. At least 1 year of experience reading and interpreting blueprints. At least 1 year of hands-on experience working with hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Ability to assemble mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components using appropriate techniques. Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings, schematics, and work instructions. Proficiency in using hand tools and power tools safely and effectively. Basic understanding of electrical wiring in an assembly environment. Ability to operate overhead cranes and jibs or willingness to learn. Capability to use measuring tools such as tape measures and gauges to verify dimensions and alignment. Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills. Ability to work safely in a production and shop environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Ownership of a basic personal tool set suitable for mechanical assembly work. Socket set and ratchets in 3/8" and 1/2" drive, primarily SAE sizes (metric optional but helpful). Wrench set, primarily SAE sizes (metric optional but helpful). Assorted pliers, including basic pliers, needle nose, channel locks, vise grips, and side cutters. Complete screwdriver set for general assembly work. Adjustable/Crescent wrenches for various fastener sizes. Hammer, with a dead blow hammer preferred if available. Hex key (Allen) key set. Nut drivers, primarily SAE sizes. Tape measure for accurate measurement and layout. Tool box, ideally a rolling type, to organize and transport tools on the shop floor. Why Work Here? Work Environment This position operates on a first-shift schedule, typically from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with regular overtime available until 5:00 p.m. Some Saturday overtime is offered from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Work takes place in a shop or production environment where heavy equipment and machinery are assembled. You regularly use hand tools, power tools, overhead cranes, and jibs to handle and assemble large components. The environment is hands-on and mechanically focused, requiring safe work practices around moving equipment, tools, and lifting devices, and appropriate workwear suitable for a manufacturing or assembly setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Oak Creek, WI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $28.00/hr.
