Machine Assembler Job Description This role focuses on assembling large sheet metal equipment and control panel structures at a fabrication facility in South Bend, IN. You will work at heights and on ladders, using hand and power tools to fasten, fit, and assemble metal components while following quality and safety standards. The position involves working closely with a team and is well suited for individuals with construction or mechanical assembly experience. Responsibilities Assemble and fasten sheet metal panels, joints, and seams using bolts, rivets, caulks, metal drive clips, and other fasteners to build complete products and subassemblies. Use power tools such as drills, impacts, grinders, saws, and plasma cutting equipment to cut, drill, and prepare metal components. Lay out, measure, and mark dimensions and reference lines on materials using tape measures, levels, squares, and calculators to ensure accurate fabrication and assembly. Install insulation and other materials into sheet metal assemblies according to specifications. Drill holes in metal for screws, bolts, and rivets, ensuring proper alignment and fit of components. Assemble and fit pre-fabricated parts to form subassemblies and final assemblies according to instructions and specifications. Read and follow basic instructions, drawings, and, when applicable, blueprints to complete assembly tasks accurately. Work on ladders and at heights safely while assembling and installing components. Use hand tools, including wrenches and socket wrenches, to tighten and secure fasteners. Maintain cleanliness and organization of the work area, including tools, equipment, and materials. Collaborate with team members to complete projects efficiently and support a safe, productive work environment. Follow all safety guidelines and quality standards throughout the fabrication and assembly process. Essential Skills Previous mechanical assembly experience, including building large equipment or similar structures. Construction experience such as carpentry, drywall, metal roofing, or related trades. Proficiency using power tools, including drills, grinders, plasma cutting equipment, impacts, and saws. Ability to read a tape measure accurately to 1/16 of an inch. Experience using tape measures, levels, and squares for layout and measurement. Basic mechanical aptitude and familiarity with assembly, installation, and fabrication processes. Comfort working on ladders and at heights while performing assembly tasks. Ability to lift up to 40 pounds regularly during the workday. Ownership of steel-toe footwear suitable for a fabrication shop environment. Ownership of a basic set of hand tools, including wrenches and socket wrenches, or the ability to obtain them within two weeks of starting. Experience working with sheet metal and hand tools in an assembly or construction setting. Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced, hands-on environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Ability to read and interpret blueprints is a strong plus. Experience in sheet metal fabrication, construction, or installation work. Experience with installation assembly and mechanical assembly in industrial or commercial settings. Familiarity with using calculators for measurements and layout. Comfort working in darker, louder, and dirtier fabrication environments. Strong attention to detail and commitment to meeting quality and safety standards. Why Work Here? You will regularly work with sheet metal, power tools such as drills, grinders, saws, and plasma cutting equipment, as well as hand tools like wrenches and socket wrenches. The position requires working on ladders and at heights. Standard hours are Monday through Thursday from 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with frequent opportunities for additional hours on Fridays and Saturdays. Steel-toe footwear is required, and typical attire is suitable for a fabrication shop setting where safety and durability are priorities. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of South Bend, IN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $18.00/hr.
