Job Description

  • Job Title:
    Grinder Operator - 1st shift - 21/hr
  • Job Description
  • This role operates grinding equipment to produce high-quality parts within tight tolerances in a clean, modern manufacturing facility.
You will set up and run grinding machines, inspect parts using precision measuring tools, and follow blueprints to ensure parts meet exact specifications. The position offers the opportunity to learn centerless grinding and grow into more advanced machine operation responsibilities.
  • Responsibilities
  • + Set up and operate grinding machines to perform precision grinding of metal, aluminum, plastic, and other parts.
+ Perform machine grinding of parts according to production requirements and quality standards. + Straighten parts as needed to ensure they meet dimensional and flatness specifications. + Measure parts using micrometers, calipers, and other precision tools to verify they meet required tolerances. + Read and interpret basic blueprints to understand dimensions, tolerances, and part requirements. + Work with tight tolerances and use basic math, including decimals and fractions, to confirm accurate measurements. + Identify defects, inconsistencies, or issues with parts early in the process to minimize scrap and rework. + Perform general machining tasks such as deburring and surface grinding as needed. + Assist with machine operation tasks across the production area, including general labor and production support. + Use tools such as angle grinders and other shop equipment safely and effectively. + Follow standard operating procedures and safety guidelines within the machine shop environment. + Collaborate with team members and supervisors to maintain production flow and meet output targets. + Maintain a clean and organized work area and support overall cleanliness of the facility. + Learn and develop skills in centerless grinding with guidance and on-the-job training. + Operate forklifts or other material handling equipment if required and if properly trained.
  • Essential Skills
  • + Proven experience using micrometers and calipers for precise measurement of parts.
+ Ability to perform basic math using fractions and decimals to verify dimensions and tolerances. + Prior manufacturing experience in a production or machine shop environment. + Ability to read and interpret a basic blueprint to understand part specifications. + Comfort working with metals, aluminum, plastics, and other materials in a production setting. + Capability to follow tight tolerances and maintain consistent quality in machined parts. + Experience with general machine operation and production tasks. + Ability to identify issues with parts and take action to prevent scrap. + Basic understanding of grinding processes, including machine grinding and surface grinding. + Ability to perform general labor tasks in a manufacturing environment. + Willingness to learn centerless grinding and expand machine operation skills.
  • Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • + Experience in a machine shop environment, including machining and deburring.
+ Familiarity with grinding processes such as surface grinding and centerless grinding. + Experience operating angle grinders and similar handheld tools. + Experience in general production work, including machine operation and material handling. + Exposure to working with plastics in a manufacturing or machining context. + Experience using forklifts or other material handling equipment, where properly trained and authorized. + Interest in long-term growth within a manufacturing organization and willingness to learn new equipment and processes.

  • Work Environment
  • The role is based in a newer, very clean, and tidy manufacturing facility in the Fort Wayne area, established in this location in 2022.
The shop currently operates approximately eight machines and provides a well-organized machine shop environment with modern equipment. The standard schedule follows a four 10-hour day workweek, typically 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, with Friday schedules varying as needed. The environment involves working around grinding machines, machining equipment, and general production tools, including angle grinders and precision measuring instruments such as micrometers and calipers. Team members work on the shop floor in typical industrial attire suitable for a machine shop setting and follow all safety and cleanliness standards to maintain the facility's high level of organization.

  • This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Fort Wayne, IN.
  • Pay and Benefits
  • The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $21.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your jobclassification and length of employment.
